@TimGreig Says:
Whitman was far from the father of free verse: there was vers libre, before that and of course Leaves of Grass was saturated with the phrasing of the King James Bible. Anyone with a modicum of religious upbringing can feel how much it reads like biblical verse.

Definitely not the father of free verse (in the English language that would be William Blake). But good video, concise and offers a good quick overview.

@Tonyisgaming Says:
Whitman was a Paumanok boy in love with America beyond what America had become. As a boy, he admired the history of America before colonization, he admired the land of America more than the society. This is why he is America's poet. He was stubborn in his infancy and it allowed him to keep the child within him alive as he began to understand and appreciate society more through the calamities of the Civil War. What's more is that he did not find success when he came with his childlike pure art. He had to make a deal with the devil and write from his evil side in order to grab the eyes of Americans. But, the means justify the ends. He didn't take his fortune from the third edition and let it inflate his desires. He rather focused on the needs of his fellow Americans who made him so wealthy. That is the American spirit. He is one of the most teachable artists to learn about. For me, I can relate very much. Might have to do with the fact I grew up in Hauppauge, lol.

@willae1 Says:
...long island conjures images of suburban america to most people that have been there....the vast majority of people there dont live in the hamptons, its just as known for fire island's club scene. or being the other commuter option for people that work in NYC (the other being newark)
