The last kingdom series and books are quality. But I was a bit deflated when I found out the real Uhtred the Brave wasn't raised by Vikings. Great little plot twist by Bernard Cornwell tho. Makes Uhtred of Bebbenburg such a great character when he can relate to the Engagagagaglish and the Vikings. Uhtred the Brave was still a gangster tho.

Alfred the Great's efforts to protect vulnerable members of society can be considered a form of early social justice. , His legal reforms promoted fairness, equity, and the well-being of all members of society. In his legal code, Alfred implemented provisions that aimed to safeguard the rights and interests of vulnerable individuals, including widows, orphans, and the poor. Some examples of these protections include: Widows: Alfred's laws ensured that widows were granted their due inheritance and were protected from exploitation or forced remarriage. They were also granted a period of mourning during which they could not be compelled to remarry, allowing them to maintain their independence and make decisions about their future. Orphans: The legal code provided for the protection and care of orphans, ensuring that their rights to inheritance were upheld and that they were not taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals. Guardians were appointed to look after the interests of orphaned children until they came of age. The poor and disadvantaged: Alfred's laws promoted the fair treatment of the poor and disadvantaged, seeking to ensure that they were not subjected to undue hardship or exploitation. For instance, there were provisions that protected the rights of serfs and slaves, as well as measures to prevent debt bondage and provide relief to those in need. Access to justice: Alfred's legal system aimed to make justice accessible to all members of society, regardless of their social status or wealth. The establishment of a standardized legal code and the appointment of judges to enforce the laws helped to create a more equitable system that served the interests of the entire population. Although Alfred's efforts to protect vulnerable members of society reflect a commitment to promoting fairness, equity, and compassion in his kingdom. These measures laid the foundation for the further development of social and legal protections in English law, influencing the evolution of the English common law system over the centuries. Chat GPT

@michaelharrington8401 Says:
If Alfred doesn't hold on, in the swamps of Somerset in that desperate winter of 878, and come back to defeat the Vikings at Eddington, the history of England would have taken a much different turn. More Scandinavian, more pagan, definitely different than what it became. THAT is why he's called Alfred the Great.
@georgerevell5643 Says:
Vikings are nothing but civilian rapist mass murderes with a 'cool name'. If I was king of England at the time I'd have them implailed on spikes ALIVE and left there to scream as a warning to others.
@Shadefinder1 Says:

Time for the people to rise up, kick out these norman- Germanic upstarts and put a real anglo- Celt on the throne. Britain needs to be declared the anglo-celt homeland.

Things did indeed get real
@mortenfrosthansen84 Says:
It was more a king, who went behind the back of the conquerors, who was indeed a invasive occupying force.. however, if they didn't let the former ruler keep his small kingdom, I don't think England would have had near the same history
@bludluva Says:
Alfred the great had a very measured and surprisingly humane response to the Vikings, who got treated more fairly than they probably deserved. The sign of a clearheaded leader to not kick the enemy when he’s down. If he chose to go an eye for an eye, it probably would have given later Viking generations a justification to keep fighting

The star wars quote "be back and in greater numbers" comment had me laughing!

@johnwatts8346 Says:
what about how britian / englands 3 most famous monarchs are all female (henry 8th is arguably as famous or maybe more so than liz 1, but he was a horrible tyrant when england was a just another nation, whislt Liz 1 is a legend and england became truly great under her, she should be named 'the great' imo.
@michaelinminn Says:
By the persistence virtue of strong Christian men, the Vikings were vanquished in England. Oh, by the way !! Vikings marrying Christian women was what really turned the tide; both in in England and Scandinavia. Viking men were physically stronger, but Christian women had a stronger ally.🙂
@chikushodiz91 Says:
I laugh when the heathens called the Vikings heathen just like the romas that were the actual barbarians called others barbarians it’s hilarious

Yea , we’ve seen the Last Kingdom , we know all about Alfred
@bkohatl Says:
Irish High King Brian Boru defeated the Vikings in the Battle of Clontarf in which the Irish and Viking Armies annihilated each other. Brian was killed in an ambush on April 23, 1014. That said I will NEVER FORGIVE HENRY VIII for desecrating the grave of the Alfred the Great. Henry VIII was a bully and Alfred was a real man and hero!
@nexus6163 Says:
So… there’s not much we know about Alfred then? Seems like a mashup of the first 3 monarchs. I’ve read that we don’t actually know what the great even looked like.

Slight mistake on the map for the battle of Ashdown, the map shows Ashdown near Lambourn, south of Wantage, it's the current thinking now that it took place north east fo Compton in west Berkshire near Lowbury hill which is not far from the Thames and Reading.
