Voice of the Canadian West | Preston Manning | The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast - S4: E68

????

Preston Manning and I discuss populist movements in the west, history building and storytelling, the power of reading audiences, the new tenets of conservatism, communication in politics, the Chinese Communist Party, and much more. Manning (often called the 'father of modern Canadian Conservatism") recounts the history of Canada's Reform Party, which he founded, and his takeaways from a long career in politics–much of which he includes in books like 'Faith, Leadership, and Public Life: Leadership Lessons from Moses to Jesus' and 'Think Big: Adventures in Life and Democracy.' Upon his retirement, he founded the Manning Foundation for Democratic Education and the Manning Centre for Building Democracy, not-for-profit organizations dedicated to strengthening Canadian democracy in line with conservative principles. Find Manning's latest book, 'Do Something!: 365 Ways You Can Strengthen Canada,' at: https://www.amazon.com/Do-Something-Ways-Strengthen-Canada-ebook/dp/B086 XL6CVC/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=PRESTON+MANNING&qid=1631540649&s =books&sr=1-1 // SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL // Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/DrJordanBPeterson Donations: https://jordanbpeterson.com/donate // COURSES // Discovering Personality: https://jordanbpeterson.com/personality Self Authoring Suite: https://selfauthoring.com Understand Myself (personality test): https://understandmyself.com // BOOKS // Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life: https://jordanbpeterson.com/Beyond-Order 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: https://jordanbpeterson.com/12-rules-for-life Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief: https://jordanbpeterson.com/maps-of-meaning // LINKS // Website: https://jordanbpeterson.com Events: https://jordanbpeterson.com/events Blog: https://jordanbpeterson.com/blog Podcast: https://jordanbpeterson.com/podcast // SOCIAL // Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Instagram: https://instagram.com/jordan.b.peterson Facebook: https://facebook.com/drjordanpeterson // SPONSORS // Interested in sponsoring my audio podcast? I was very sceptical about how interesting this episode would be, considering I'm from Denmark and don't really know much about American and not to mention Canadian politics, but I found this to be one of my favourite episodes. Preston Manning really has mastered the art of speech and his intriguing analogies and metaphors are very enticing. Each section of this podcast, from history building and storytelling to the power of reading the audience had me very engaged. I thank both of you fine gentlemen for giving me a better understanding of the history as-well as the current political sphere in Canada. It was an absolute pleasure to watch. God Bless.

Coming from an oil and gas country, all of his oil analogies hit home for me 😂

2 months later, and this discussion about Trudeau is far more gracious than he deserves.
@wildrose28LT Says:
Preston Manning was the first politician I ever shock hands with. What he accomplished in building a grass roots party in Western Canada was extraordinary and I know of no one else who can articulate the issues of the West better than he can. Thank for doing this interview!

Thank you 😊

Canada must stand together. From coast to beautiful coast.
@JayB-JayB Says:
I miss the classic politicians like Manning, Martin, Layton, Harper, Chretien... the politicians today are rather dumbed down.

This video gave me more hope in our Democratic institution than all of my years in university.

I can no longer attend his talk at DAR Constitution Hall in DC bc the mayor mandated the vaccine for all events in DC. I have three row B tickets for sale if anyone is looking for an up close and personal experience with this incredible man.

I would love to see some of the conceptual frameworks Mr. Manning mentions around 50:00. Are these available online anywhere?

Anyone ask a basic question, is it better to be led by women or men? I, think men see the bigger picture more easily and most women just don't. It's stupid it's so obvious.
@mansiondave23 Says:
1:08:00 the unseen logic in his decision to ease in the change, instead of charging in guns blazing, is that any applied force would create an opposing force.
@christheneutral Says:
An excellent definition of how populist movements come about
@dancingbabybins Says:
Pierre Poilievre is the finacial mind to play PM, it's about being able to give the bad news and he can do what O'Toole can't. O'Toole is more foriegn minister/Top official type politician, the cons need to consolidate around the sad need of austerity and addressing domestic debt. Call it scare tactics but it's gotten scary and now we need to be capable of more defense spending ontop.
@tammyday9389 Says:
Thank-you! Both Preston and you, Jordan, make me "proud" to be an Albertan.
@czelantini Says:
I agree with that young man, Canada and my city no longer feel like home despite being born here.
@sweetmomster1001 Says:
Thank you Dr. Peterson for bringing the Canadian politics to your podcast, really looking forward to your conversation with Pierre Polievre. I hope you one day become interested in running for PM that would be the best thing that can happen to this country that is in desperate need of effective and intelligent leadership.
@buckramsay5924 Says:
How was there not one question about the new populist party making inroads - the PPC?
@OriginalBobJohn Says:
Love hearing of governmental differences between ours whether subtle or staunch. Thank you.
@dnormore1814 Says:
Dr Peterson... loved this talk from a great Canadian. I remember Mr. Manning being treated poorly by the media and mischaracterized almost on a daily basis. If you could, an interview with former Newfoundland Premier Brian Peckford would be interesting. I believe he is the last surviving Premier that signed the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that was done in the 1980s. It would be an interesting to hear his take on what is going on in Canada in this current climate of mandates, lockdowns etc.
@jrhwood_ Says:
Modern-day nuclear power generation is far safer than stereotypical Chernobyl. The yet to be solved problem of disposing of nuclear byproducts is trivial when compared to carbon capture. Nuclear power - in areas not prone to natural disasters or authoritarian regimes - is safe and superior to hydrocarbons. Our sensationalized fear of nuclear comes from contamination bias and a lack of understanding of fundamental physics by the general public.
@sarah_honey_badger Says:
What a Beautiful Gentlemen, I am so glad to have listened to this so far, I am half way through now and I just have to say this man is a true symbol for our current young men, his drive and fundamental faith, his mindset is so refreshing and his stories are captivating. Thank you Sir!
@lylebrant Says:
Preston is awesome. I have a Reform Party coffee cup in the cupboard
@cavscout62 Says:
Canada just like the U.S. is suffering from the blight of radical leftism which is no different from fascism, the only difference between the 2 at the bottom is who is in charge. Canada’s former media just as in the U.S. has become nothing less than the Propaganda Ministry and there’s Nothing free about it. The ‘60’s Idiot Radicals put together a great plan to take over via a long term view using the education system and media and they’ve been very successful up until about 2012 when people finally began to awaken. Also the U.S. being a Constitutional Republic instead of a democracy is something that is very different despite the leftists trying with all their might to convince Americans that they are a democracy. Also the U.S. Population is very well armed whereas the Canadian Population is only well armed in the rural areas. The population can’t defeat the MIC in a set piece war but can over a long period win if they’re willing to sustain a guerrilla warfare campaign led by Veterans. We Texans and the Floridians are not accepting the filth being forced on the Population by the ScumBags in DC and We Will Not Comply. There are those in Canada of a same Heart and mindset and The Worm Will Turn. Long Live Both Nations.
@slimshady4325 Says:
Preston had the right idea but the leftists took him out with Stephen Harper... the leftist in conservative clothes.
@JetsfanMrT Says:
That last point was brilliant Mr. Manning, as a young person involved in grassroots and internal party politics...it frustrates me how little my peers care about the ground game of politics vs getting likes
@SH-lb1nu Says:
I appretiate what Mr. Manning has done for the west but the main theme and his advocacy for "Democracy" is lingering eddifice why the west is not and will never be free. Democracy doesn't exist in Canada, when a Parliament can be elected by a 18% consensus to pass laws by fiat, fund and control media, close down free trade, punish provincial dissent, and remove citizens rights to private propierty and personal atonomy. The better question is to Mr. Manning what his definition of democracy is. Democracy is evil, always has been, elites tricked the serfs into this false sense of freedom when we are actually just a weapon they use to wheel us against each other.
@jjuniper274 Says:
🤙😊
@SLang-xk4dj Says:
Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. That was James Madison ;) Although Andrew Jackson was definitely the Trump of his day.
@extyr Says:
With all these Canadian politicians, I often hear about Quebec and its troubled relationship with the rest of Canada. Why not interview someone from there with a good handle on the independence movement? Maxime Bernier was a French speaker, but it didn't really go that way with him. The language barrier can be daunting, but I think it'd help get a better understanding of Canadian politics. Personally, I'd really like to see JBP talk to Mathieu Bock-Côté or Jean-Françoi Lisé. I learned a lot from these interviews about the ROC and I think it'd be fair to get someone to explain Quebec's point of view.
@dickslinger9925 Says:
When he speaks of populist party, he defines it as progressive and grass roots. Stalin and Adolph were populists. Why can't Canada be more like Ontario? Lol (my personally biased 370 yrs of family history Ontario on the Lake). What is the carbon footprint for the 1 ton of rare earth Neodymium and Dysposium per wind mill?
@sasquatch4315 Says:
what does he think of the PPC?
@simonbruneau167 Says:
Canada is litteraly 4 countries in 1: Québec and french speaking areas, Atlantic canada, the west and Ontario. It is doomed to fail.
@pr1me840 Says:
Conversation I want: Derren Brown and Jordan Peterson. Topic: "How everyone has the potential to do evil. Do we learn to love or is it inherent?" (I'll try and post this comment till it happens...;)
@peanutgallery7753 Says:
I believe Jordan worked with the NDP when he was a youngster and was close with Rachel Notley's parents. I wonder, since we are talking to former premiers, if a discussion with Rachel would be productive. She is clearly a smart and, on some level, a well meaning person, but too often when I hear her statements it is repeating the slogans and platitudes of her party.
@cccchip04 Says:
kk where can I sign up? lol I don't wanna make laws, I wanna build up opportunities so the people can have a functioning united local economy. One of which they control and utilize, so they can save themselves. . Self-sufficient community build their own wealth and insurance. . But oh my, we would starve all the tyrants and greedy corporations if we woke up the people to the fact that they are born free and can save themselves
