Fortitude: American Resilience | Dan Crenshaw | The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast S4: E71

????

This episode was recorded on September 30, 2021. Congressman Dan Crenshaw and I discuss the fallout of withdrawing from Afghanistan and the details of the 20-plus-year conflict. We talk about life as a US congressman and his experience as a US Navy SEAL. About social media and politics–especially in relation to modern conservatism. And about climate change. On that note, we also examined Dan's recently-published 'Fortitude: American Resilience in the Era of Outrage.' Dan is a retired Navy SEAL with five deployments overseas during the Afghan and Iraq wars. While in Afghanistan, an IED blast led to Dan losing his right eye. Crenshaw was elected to Congress in 2018, where he serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee (broadest jurisdiction out of all legislative committees). Dan also serves on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. Find more Dan Crenshaw: @DanCrenshawTX https://twitter.com/DanCrenshawTX Or on his website: https://crenshaw.house.gov/ Check out "Fortitude: American Resilience in the Era of Outrage": https://www.amazon.com/Fortitude-American-Resilience-Era-Outrage/dp/1538733307 [00:00] Intro [02:30] Dan Crenshaw explains the situation in Afghanistan over the last 20 years [4:15] 'We decided that the Taliban should no longer be in control of Afghanistan. That was day one' - Dan Crenshaw [9:00] Exploring the details of the new Taliban rule [11:45] 'I come from the Special Ops community. I also come from the intelligence community. You have to work with shady characters sometimes but this wasn't one of those cases, this was a time to put your foot down and refuse to let this happen' - Dan Crenshaw [13:00] Crenshaw talks about all the common-sense failure of the planned withdrawal and the politics that made a reasonable exit impossible [13:45] 'Do you know what 'slogan' means? It's from Welsh. It literally means 'battle cry of the dead'' - Jordan Peterson [16:30] The nature of an endless war against the Taliban [20:45] Life as a US Congressman [26:25] 'The Majority rules absolutely in the House. Nancy Pelosi only has a 4-vote majority and they just kick our buts all the time. We [Republicans] have no power' - Dan Crenshaw [32:30] Social media in politics [34:45] 'The job of a representative is to explain things [clearly]' - Dan Crenshaw [37:00] How are conservatives engaging with the youth? What's the current message? [50:00] Jordan outlines what he sees and the inherent diversity in the political world as per human psychology [51:30] 'Well, you let these diverse people be free so they can have ideas that might be appropriate for the next problem and then you let them talk, which is why free speech is so important.' - Jordan Peterson [54:30] The complexity of climate change politics. Capitalism and the free market as testing grounds for what's actually valuable. Highlighting the anti-capitalist sentiments that seem to come mixed with climate change beliefs, making solutions like nuclear power less likely [1:03:00] 'I'm much more afraid of the people dealing with climate change than of climate change itself' - Jordan Peterson [1:13:30] 'Cheap energy means wealth–directly, with virtually no intermediation' - Jordan Peterson [1:14:00] Overview of new proposed climate change legislation in the US. Pros and cons of the infrastructure project. @JohnChampagne Says:
'Market failure' is not a reflection of the fact that imperfection is inherent in any human creation. It is a reflection of a systemic defect: The market is not honest in its representation of costs (because we do not charge general fees, or we charge only nominal fees, to industries when they degrade or deplete natural wealth in pursuit of profit), so all decisions are skewed by the bad information being conveyed by the dishonest prices. Market failure is about dishonest prices. People who are concerned about truth as a primary value might be among those who are most interested in correcting market failure (a.k.a. economic externalities). If we decide that environmental impacts should be represented in prices, so that business planners and consumers can make better decisions, we can require industries to pay fees proportional to emissions, extraction or habitat destruction. We can know that fees charged proportional to harmful impact are high enough when we are able to take random polls and find that the amount of this or that kind of pollutant being released, or the rate of extraction of this or that resource, does not exceed what most people think is acceptable. (This is an appropriate criterion for a democratic society, if we believe that we have a shared right to decide limits to how fast resources are depleted or how much pollution is released. A democratic society would align policy that aims to manage environmental impacts with what most people think is acceptable. Fees charged would be neither too high, nor too low, in the view of most people.) If we share proceeds from environmental impact fees to all people, we will ensure that the policy is fair, and will address the problem of extreme poverty.
@JohnChampagne Says:
The idea that we can build a democracy in a faraway place, while our own democracy is so utterly dysfunctional, lacks credibility. I think there's general agreement that we have a shared right to decide limits to various kinds of impacts on the environment, but if we took a random poll to find whether the rate of extraction of fossil fuels or the rate of emission of fossil carbon is being held to an acceptable limit, we don't know that we'd find that current practice reflects what most people think is acceptable. A democratic society would not allow depletion of resources or emission of pollutants beyond what average opinion says is OK. Are we embodying a model that should be imposed on the world? Our economic system (the entire global economic system) is dishonest. We don't charge substantial fees to industries that emit pollution, deplete natural resources or disturb / destroy wildlife habitat, so environmental impacts are not reflected in prices. If prices do not honestly convey information about costs, people (consumers and business planners) make bad decisions about what to do. The distortion leads to faster depletion, more pollution, and more destruction of wildlife, more extinction.
@solomonroskin8879 Says:
Poverty is not a market failure. It's a mistake to assume that it is the market's job to get people out of poverty. The market can get people out of poverty, but poverty exists because of many number of things that are not due to economic reasons. The market seeks to maximize trade. That's it.

Dan Crenshaw is this generations H.W. Bush or McCain. I'm as excited for him as I am McCarthy being the speaker of the house in 2022. The Republican party is moving away from these feckless GOP types. I do respect and appreciate all he did for the country and the military. I don't believe he is malicious or desires the downfall of the US like the Squad. However I do not see him as what the Republicans need most now.

@jwburdett Says:
Thank you for continuing to bring thought provoking and honorable discussion to such varied topics. As a retired veteran, I especially enjoyed getting to hear Rep. Crenshaw in a longer format dialogue. Another good combat arms slogan that stuck with me would be “slow is smooth, smooth is fast, speed is the economy of motion”. Carry on.

"I have to say, when I mention now names, like Mrs. (Angela) Merkel and even Vladimir Putin, and so on, they all have been *Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum* ...But what we are very proud of now is the young generation like Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau… We penetrate the cabinets." "So yesterday I was at a reception for Prime Minister Trudeau and I know that half of his cabinet, or even more than half of his cabinet, are actually *Young Global Leaders."* -Klaus Schwab, WEF THE GREAT RESET
@donhansen1175 Says:
You have to love these guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@donhansen1175 Says:
Notice that the left realizes that by illegal immigration debasing the value of young people's labor they make young people discouraged and more dependent on left wing politics. Young people do not notice that it destroys their future. Many employers of labor just see it as more profits. They do not realize that when the troops and workers fail we all fail and troops and workers must have genuine emotional buy in for success and happiness!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When the smartest most committed people reviewing an army are on the reviewing stand the army IS NOT WORTH REVIEWING! Best, Don Hansen
@donhansen1175 Says:
We need to quit illegals coming in to debase the value of young people's labor. Don Hansen

Thank you for this conversation. Dan Crenshaw is charming, smart and created a brand, as Pirates of the Caribbean, Moshe Dajan, even beeing a victim of bad luck on the wrong place, wrong moment. It's not harming him as beeing good looking. But our question from Europe: How can the young Generation credit him confidence, beeing part of the Young Global Leader, WEF ? Money comes to him, he says. One hour a week is enough for found raising. Is it, or does he just not to care about? We do hope, he's honest as he presents it be...!
@jasonchristie675 Says:
Jp for high council, star wars Republic chancellor right here lmao
@claudeagle271 Says:
He is not being transparent, and he is not very convincing with his arguments. I think he needs some more self reflection, and to more deeply consider the counter arguements. He mentions a few of them but as I said hes not convincing at all. Just dismissing something as "its complicated" isnt helpful either.

Why do both Jordan and Dan Crenshaw go along with the official story of 911? Why do they help to perpetuate the lie?
@Weirdomanification Says:
Government guaranteed safety nets incentivize bad decision making. We should have safety nets, but they should be private and not guaranteed.
@idesofmarchUNIAEA Says:
24:56 As Thomas Jefferson who he offended. The Pirates off the coast of Tripoli were his problem at that time. When Jefferson read the Quran, he couldn’t believe it. 1:03:00 Total market failure existed in the eastern bloc when I was there in 1987. They did not yet have unleaded gas. The market economy saw a problem with lead in gasoline in the 1960s, and by the 1980s we had a solution. 1:10:10 what about a thorium molten salt reactor. We had one running in the United States from 1965 until 1970 in Oak Ridge Tennessee. The technology was developed soon after the second world war. Byproducts would be molybdenum 99 for cancer research and diagnostics. Xenon for NASA, for interstellar space travel. The excess heat could be used for water desalinization, and petroleum distillate manufacturing. Bill Gates is helping China build one. So will we be buying modular nuclear reactors from China? How will that empower the communist Chinese party? Inquiring minds want to know.
@FooshNick064 Says:
John McCain with an eyepatch. Vote this shill out. Guys stock trades are better than Pelosi's.
@MegaPint-v5w Says:
Dan Crenshaw is a low key sell out and hates anything that is America First or Trump. He tows the neo con line and only has appeal to the baby boomer conservatives who get played by the Republican party by useing their sympathies towards veterans. He's basically a John MaCain. So sad.
@Mr._Anderpson Says:
Ah, Dan Crenshaw. Wasn't he the guy who said we shouldn't be concerned with the enormous potential for abuse with respect to insider trading from members of Congress? Yeah, he said it was a member of Congress' best way to "better themselves". This guy is neither of the people nor for the people.
@JeepCherokeeful Says:

"The woke pathology". Lol So perfect. And also, the reason they "hate" judgment? Because they hate God and its judgment. In their view God is bad and jusgment is bad. Thats why you have Satanic cult opening prayer in the US. In the end, its ALL spiritual. Everything that happens happen in the spiritual realm first.
@thatwasprettyneat Says:

"We need a war on terror to stop terrorism" So Dan.... why did we attack the middle east and not our intelligence agencies whom were responsible for the attack??
@medalikhaled Says:
American politicians are full of shit and their words can not be trusted whether they were republicans or democrats (this is a wide political spectrum by the way) they always try to come up as the good guys or the saviors of the innocent people no matter how bad the situation is, and always claiming that the wars they get into are defensive when it is plain obvious that it is not.
