Jordan isn't quite up the origins of slavery and war, though; there is a relationship between them and it's both interesting and complex, and centers of settled agriculture which co-ops raiding into an organized state activity to meet the demand for agricultural labor. As for the contrary argument, it's not so much the Enlightenment, it's Homer. Historically, Homer, not the Bible, is the true foundation of Western culture (Athens being an extension of Homer). Homer is in many way a purer expression of what would become the Biblical ethos without some of the problematic elements of Judeo-Christian ideology, the shortcomings of which allowed its current degradation in the first place.
So while I'll broadly agree with Josh Hawley, I could also argue that rediscovering Homer and the Classical pre-Judeo-Christian tradition is equally useful and in some cases more useful and potentially unifying than the Biblical tradition. I doubt that discussion will ever happen though.
