Truth and Adventure as an Antidote to Suffering | Douglas Murray | EP 376

????

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Douglas Murray, author of 'The War on The West,' discuss how a misguided purpose leads to abject misery, the cowardice of experts who choose silence in the face of malevolence, the psychology of fear, and the necessity of willful exposure to combat it. ??Douglas Murray is a British writer, playwright, media correspondent and political commentator. He is the founder of the think tank the Centre for Social Cohesion, which is now part of the Henry Jackson Society. His publications include but are not limited to: 'The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam (2017),' 'The Madness of Crowds: Gender, Race and Identity (2019),' and most recently 'The War on the West: How to Prevail in the Age of Unreason (2022)'. Murray has also written columns for publications such as 'The Wall Street Journal' and is an associate editor for 'The Spectator.' I don't quite understand the word that Douglas Murray uses at the end of his remarks at 1:29:39 . He said "but you're the "marg?" You are the "mark?" "mogg?"

I have had a brush with death 4 times in my life already. 2 times the doctors said I only had a 30% chance of surviving. Still here. I live with excruciating pain every min of every day. People constantly telling me I cant.... or because of my condition I am limited in life. In many ways I am. But..... Life is beautiful. I am able of so much just as I am. Through myself I have been able to encourage others by the way I live, my attitude and in talking to them. I praise God for my life. As miserable as it seems to many, I don't see it that way. I have had many friends take the quick way out. I feel bad for them that they are missing out on so much more in life than ones self. Get outside yourself and see life is beautiful. Belive and know God loves you and will not give you more than you can handle. Thank you Dr Peterson for everything! Wisdom heals.

Very interesting stimulating talk. But beware of the ad. Peterson isn't an economist. He promotes a gold dealer who obviously has a deep interest in 'predicting' some type of crash, be it a dollar crash or any other crash to sell his services. Pretty obvious - apparently not to Peterson, or he buys into the crash belief and does not investigate other sensible ways to hedge against a decline of the dollar.

These men. These whom so many ignorant people despise because they trust awful people's caricatures of them. These men are good.
@sgordon8123 Says:
Viktor E Frankl explains the holocaust. Its not what we want to hear. But anyone watching any nature documentary and accepting that humans are just animals will understand it quicker. Then you have to fight nihilism and embrace self love and love for every species ...
@sgordon8123 Says:
Blind faith is very dangerous. But we are all going to die so hanging on to your integrity is about all we can do. A survivor from the holocaust witnessed that the best people died first in that situation.
@sgordon8123 Says:
The problem with voting for the right wing is not that it's not more logically sensible but that WHOEVER is in power will get corrupted (just influenced to begin with but over time...) AND you cannot let the poor get too poor because if they (enough of them) get desperate enough they WILL trash the society because why not bring you down as they sink when they blame you...
@Veritas007 Says:
Yawn - Art critic nonsense. Paint a picture or shut yer clapper . Both of you have had deep life experiences. At this point, there is no excuse for observing the Creator like stoned graduate students.

My daughter has bipolar ive various medical conditions been in and out hospitals most of my life in theory nhs management may decide maybe id agree in times im in hospital that i cost to much? It will start..... eugenics has never really gone away. Birth control was created to stop poor uneducated people to stop breeding
@tooter4u271 Says:
Here is the advice I would give after decades of relating to women: Be impressive in some way before you even talk to women, perhaps through the expertise of a skill, perhaps through being smooth socially, being physically fit. Be warm and funny. And do this while ignoring the one that interests you. If you have what she wants she will eventually approach you, or if you do approach her she will be much more receptive, especially if you don’t come at her like an out of control horn dog. Good luck.

At 47:00 there is a brief discussion with respect to Theodore Dalrymple who Jordan has interviewed. I find the man fascinating. I worked in Vocational Education in the California Department of Corrections for about a hundred years; it was a great, great experience. Many, many times an inmate would say to me, "You know, my two sister work at Google and my brother is an LA police detective; I'm the screwup! I never listened to my parents!" You realized real quick that the people who think they really know something about appropriate public management don't really know anything!

I just love the story of Elijah, and the still, small voice! It’s so extraordinary how the story doesn’t tell you the why or much about states of mind - it leaves you to work it out, to pour yourself into it. This makes it so alive, so moving.

You might find this interesting. I'm a private contractor who works with veterans in a V A facility. I have clients referred to me who have behavior And compliance problems in the v a Staff have difficulty managing them. They have difficulty because they don't know how to set boundaries, And they allow people to abuse them verbally. Every veteran I have ever worked with i've had success with Getting them to be. More compliant with their treatment plans and far less abusive by setting boundaries and putting the responsibility for their behavior back on them regardless of their frustrations. Everyone is initially so sure that approach is going to make it worse.But it always makes it better. It empowers people to learn skills that will get them more of what they want.

@marie4585 Says:
I ALSO THINK THAT PRAISING GOD IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING MEAN THAT YOU ARE SAYING IN EFECT THAT NO MATTER HOW MISERABLE YOUR LIFE IS, YOU STILL BELIEVE IN THE CONCEPT OF GOODNESS. And when you praise God, it is not to make God happy. It is to remind you of the concept of goodness and your devotion to it. And THAT is what (in part) allows you to rise above your circumstances on the wings of the eagle. I know this in having gone through cancer and other "demon" making situations.
@68libby Says:
Douglas Murray is one of the brightest minds of our time, and I wish Jordan would let him speak without constantly interrupting with yet another Bible story. There are so many times in this interview where Douglas is saying something really interesting but we never get to hear the point because Jordan cuts him off and talks over him.
@AlexReynard Says:
1:13:30 I'm reminded of how, despite Alan Moore not intending it, Rorschach became likely the most admired character in Watchmen. Yes, he's a smelly, obsessed extremist. But he has something he holds higher than himself. The Comedian is a nihilist. Silk Spectre's just trying to do what her mother wants. Nite Owl's morals are childishly idealized. Dr. Manhattan cares for nothing but results. And Ozymandias, really, just wants to be the smartest person alive for the sake of his own ego. Rorschach cares about truth and ethics enough to crawl down into the gutter where the crimes are and ignore what he must become to get justice for the victims. He's the only hero.
@AlexReynard Says:
I have to disagree with their core idea. I was given life by my parents, but they are terrible, neglectful, abusive people. I *WILL NOT* be grateful to them, because that would be *LYING.* Just as I cannot say this life on Earth is acceptable. Jordan cares so much about truth, and I care about it enough to stand firm on this: I will not say something is good when it is not. I will not be grateful for mere existence if trauma has crippled me. Getting bitter and resentful is not the only response. You can be ungrateful, _and then use that flame of anger in your gut to go build something._ Make art, invent something. Leave your abuser behind and get your revenge by becoming better than them.

Interesting stuff. As one who is engaged in nursing home/rlder care ministry, it's clear that we really are not the civilized people we think we are. We clearly have our 'Nazi' mind and I see no evidence of its abatement. The whole Covid disaster, in particular the killing of the elderly, is proof enough. I'm not sure this discussion is leading us out of our rank and evil corporate 'heart.'
