The Intersection of Evolutionary Biology, Religion and Happiness | Dr. Gad Saad | EP 377

????

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Dr. Gad Saad discuss his newly published book, 'The Saad Truth about Happiness: 8 Secrets for Leading the Good Life.' They also discuss the parasitic ability that ideas can have on the human mind, the predictors for left wing authoritarianism, the evolutionary argument for why humans are spiritual beings, the biblically rooted idea that divinity exists and manifests within rather than from without, the connections between religiosity and true happiness, and how the spirit of play is integral to living a meaningful life. Gad Saad, Ph.D is a Canadian author, professor, podcaster, researcher, and public speaker. Saad was born in 1964 to a Jewish family (Considers himself culturally Jewish, though he is spiritually atheist) in Beirut, Lebanon, before his family fled to Canada in order to escape the Lebanese civil war in 1975. Saad earned his B.Sc. and M.B.A at McGill University, followed by an M.Sc. and a Ph.D from Cornell University. Since 1994, Saad has been a professor in marketing at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, Quebec. From 2012 to 2015, Saad was the editor of the scientific journal Evolutionary Psychology, and currently writes a blog for Psychology Today called Homo Consumericus. Saad's research pertains to hormonal effects from testosterone and menstruation on consumer decisions as well as risk assessment. Saad also runs a popular podcast, The Saad Truth, which has garnered over 20 million views on youtube alone. I first saw Peterson on Rogan (in early 2018); it was a singular experience, in that he had the obvious acumen to be a "firebrand," yet WASN'T. Every thought and idea expressed was well-considered, and supported by a vast knowledge grounded in reason, education, practical application, and science.

I wish Jordan had said more about “The symmetry paper”. Can’t find it by searching without more info. Anyone?

It’s so fascinating to me how many ppl despise JP. Because when i look at the comments on his videos, i see many comments saying, Dr P, your book/podcast/ ideas saved my life. Surely this “lived experience” is worth a great deal when demonstrating the value of JP’s work. By contrast, I’ve never seen anyone comment under angry misogynist Matthew Remski’s (Conspirituality podcast ) episode (MR hates JP with a passion) that anything he says has much impact at all. I’ll give him this, he’s #1 for being snide.

"Sneaky Fuckers." That rolls off the tongue quite nicely.

I have been following your interviews, Dr. Gaad, and I’ve really appreciated your reasoning. It sounds to me that you’re not “woke,” as they say, and hearing that you’re not a believer but an evolutionary I am curious if you believe that religion is “progressive.”

The Jonah story was prophetic as then 7th of October happened and we saw a clear split between those who spoke up and said the truth and those who did and do not and I am sure that those who will not speak up have a special place in hell reserved for them.

What a brilliant pair of minds!!!!!!
@DerAndersdenker Says:
Friedrich Nietzsche was right with his observation of slave morality and master morality. He observed, that it's not strength and power, that corrups people. It's a lack of strength and power in certain areas of their lives, that actually corrups, because it makes people spiteful against the world.

Talking about speaking the truth and being unable to hold back, you guys are speaking my language! I'm not anywhere near as educated as you both, but I can't keep my mouth closed and tend to jump in and speak the truth but it has alienated me from almost everyone I know. They are those who clap at the lies ...
@FragmentedMindZ Says:
Language which forms the collective. And used like steps to knowledge or building of ideas, is the metaphorical “ tower” of Babel the archons don’t like. Because, we draw too close to the truth- which may infringe on their domain. So they quickly dismantle it.
@FragmentedMindZ Says:
The J sound did not exist many centuries ago it was added and pronounced Y or I So Jesus was yes us, or Yeshua even with the J as Jeshua or Joshua. It changes from Aesus, or ye Zuess, Aesus from ISIS. Why did the religion that was copied by Greece, Rome, Turkey, Persia and even Jews, morph into only Father, Son and Holy Ghost? Instead of ISIS, OSIRIS and HoRUS? Why did they who came centuries later get rid of the female in the triad gods?
@FragmentedMindZ Says:
Gad Sad : Science is a form of high orgiastic play. Joining and linking worlds and ideas to form cohesive conclusions. Well welcome to the female mind. A linking of all aspects of all disciplines or experiences into one large playground of symbiotic organized meaning. The divine feminine. The CORNERSTONE the builders ( of THIS world) rejected. 😢 The crying long suffering ridiculed Madonna.

JP as usual.... lectures his guests and gives them so little time to speak. Ridiculous.
@roguejames Says:
Hey Dr. Peterson... round about the hour and five mark... you started to lose him, meaning Dr. Saad... He already said he was hoping to talk about his book, and you keep prosecuting answers and ideas... Dunno what to say, other than hey man... Though understandable, this is a peer and not a student or layman... So you don't get the opportunity to critically interrogate ideas at this level all that often... but...
@scottbrantley483 Says:
I believe that Gad Saad is extremely smart, but I have issues with his slavish belief in evolution. I believe in the biblical account of creation, which means evolution doesn't exist.
@adlerbr12 Says:
if you're a genuine scientist you don't believe in the supernatural, we are a social being with no need for magic.
@Rafeberesh Says:
I think the reason Jordan is more controversial is that he comes across as more strict and rigid, where the other guy seems more approachable.

Hi there.. i will introduce my self in this conversation on the religion front by defining (religion) accordingly to the word of God says that its definition is (if someone thinks he or she is religious do well, good, to one another) this definition comes from its very word. Not by the newly post ww2 when the world stop for almost 7 years trying to bring down that goliath that wanted to conquer the whole world in its ideology of the pure blood, perfect human, man and women. And all of the other post non conventionals wars since then that has shape almost 80 years after through its very fast non stop faces of understanding the world that surrounds us; which gods are electricity, fossil fuils and metals bending, in a ever consuming, never found and reported way. Our Father in heaven bless you all
@DaneJahr Says:
my view on "why is dr. JPB seen as a more polarizing figure" he can be targeted he has so much content out that it can be taken out of context and attacked, mostly people are defending ideas and only a small unit has an objective take even people i know who do watch this have "picked a side" sad because people need these studies to be interpreted properly and some miss out because of the sphere they are in

Minute 31 _ Edward Snowden_ "People don't realize how hard it is to speak the truth to a world full of people that don't realize they're living a lie."
@petereverett780 Says:
It was some time ago that I decided that the question of the 'actual' existence of God was entirely irrelevant. Neverthess, the idea of God and belief in God is fundamental.
@magicivy9087 Says:
But doesn’t religion combine beliefs with teachings of how to live/or live by? And don’t sometimes the 2 conflict?
@magicivy9087 Says:
We are just sponge brains without discussion and the idea of God helps us stay humble—promoting conscience?
@magicivy9087 Says:
Yes-it is innate to say the truth or speak up about things that are wrong-just as ppl spread lies, ppl can spread the truth and there is no other way to come to resolution or understanding of anything otherwise. If someone is speaking illogical logic how can they sometimes know? This is why the global communists hate freedom of speech. They strive to separate (to isolate) . The tactics are all the same of a kidnapper seeking control.
@magicivy9087 Says:
I remember Ted Bundy would pretend he was injured and needed help and that’s how he lured females in position to attack.
@magicivy9087 Says:
I understand completely-from concept to detail to applications. I was in relationship with a overt narcissist and later a covert narcissist. In both relationships I was forced into being the “man” role in order to extricate myself and in some ways to get through it. That’s just a nutshell of it. I like being a woman. I just had to become a much more tough and non-naive one…..but would have preferred not to. Very exciting to listen to you two in discussion!
@MrSwapotron Says:
Glad to have access to two of the brightest of the New Age. Also, nobody talking about Dr. Peterson’s tie 😸
@IamKlaus007 Says:
Journalists interviewiing JBP could learn a lot about listening skills and absence of "personal agenda" from watching Gads listening skills. Sadly, journalistic interviewing IS about their personal bias and, in the process, we only get fragmented snippets of whats really going on the the interviewees mind. Here, we get to hear JBPs mind as it really is. Enlightening and worth the wait.
@honeyflo88 Says:
Our professor has spent way too much time hanging around the ivory tower types since he uses the term "animals like us". As far as we know, man (Udum in the original language) was made in the image of god as per Genesis. Animals are those who dont know the concept of god they just go for walks eat sleep crap and bark at dodgy people. Darwin is a confirmed plagiarist so should be cancelled from academic literature plus with all the scientific research done to date, the missing link has not been found. But what we do know, the people running around in the grasslands of south africa, were in fact polynesians, and not just baboons that learnt to cook which we evolved which would be denigrating to african people suggesting they are just 2% away of being a baboon from a DNA perspective. Thus the tale recounted in Genesis 10 holds true: one of Noah's descendants went east from mount aram, went around the pacific and ended up in south africa. So how is this relevant today, Well, they are two groups of people, the first understand that man were created in the image of god, hence avail themselves to all the grace and love that that bestows, and those that deny that and replace it with monkey mind evolution and identify with animist tendancies. King David, among his trials figured it out, and sang praise to god. However, for all can be cognitive of these songs, will get it. But those who cannot be cognitive of these songs, like a dog or a narcissist leftist will never get it, and fall short of the standard set by Adam. Oh and thank you to Dr Saad for uncovering that sneaky game those people play, and must admit I tried that gambit in the past with questionable results. I am sure that the Eve would immediate flag that as dodgy, for which I repent from that reprehensible behavior.
@garrettlees Says:
Answering Gad's question at 20:49, it's because JP is more "white" than Gad. The less "white" you are, the more of a pass you get.
@msgirl01 Says:
A majority of people are just not smart enough to grasp complex ideas And on top of that they don't care bc it takes too much effort So sad
@josephcaldwell7692 Says:
Seems the morphology hypothesis is only a small footnote compared to experience as the primary source of ideology. In the same way the pathogens in one's environment determine one's fragility. The cult of manliness, militarism and arrogance are perfect examples of maladaptation to reality.
@pontusnorgren8849 Says:
Thing is about Peterson, as much as I like him, he has this conclusion he wants to get to, I would happily skip past the religious stuff, just to hear his most interesting thoughts about meaning and societal matters.
@wendellbabin6457 Says:
1:42:31 That "playfulness" of Dr. Saad is MOST DEFINITELY NOT present in ANY Protestant Denominations I have ever been...In, seen or considered. Neither was it in my Roman Catholic childhood or EXTREMELY BRIEF schooling that was Run by the Nun equivalent of a Cross of the WORST aspects of Nurse Ratched a Nazi Gestapo Investigator and my own mother whose Psychopathy I CERTAINLY have never figured out in MY accumulated 6 decades further than MAN HATRED starting at Birth. I have often thought born in a different era, she could have GLEEFULLY founded one of the WORST of the Feminist Denominations. I was at LEAST Smart enough to figure the NUN out in Kindergarten whatever that means. The fact that Mom didn't want to pay for it so she could buy more shoes she would never wear that we REALLY couldn't afford is probably the ONLY reason I am able to still function at any level because I have never been able to recover because the damage at home only ever INCREASED until I was able to finally escape EVEN MORE. Crippling so. Now it is at the point I despair ever finding any "viable answers" ANYWHERE. I feel like I have tried any available to what ability I was ever able to. To the extent I pray for anything any more it is for the Cancer to finish me off next time if I cannot manage a sudden heart attack while in my deepest "troubled" 4 hours of exhausted sleep. Sleep, NEVER rest. Whomever is wherever has absolutely NEVER answered ANY other prayers. Especially NOT for knowledge or direction or ANSWERS that would do us anything RESEMBLING "A life if EXISTENCE, much less abundance. No matter what, or HOW MANY, or what quality "SACRIFICES".
