MechAssault is actually a spin-off of the once very popular BattleTech/MechWarrior franchise that's been going since 1984. It's clawing back its fanbase after a really bad acquisition by WizKids in the early 2000s did some real damage to the series. It has a universe as detailed as Star Wars, Star Trek, or WH40K, but eschews magic, psychics, and aliens for an endless war between human space empires. BattleTech was also a major inspiration for the original Armored Core.

After having played it, it's kinda funny you compare it with Elden Ring which is just a recycled mush you can get through without a single thought, I personally loved this game, as easy as it is, it has no pretensions about what it is and does that so well it goes well above all Fromsoftware games except maybe Sekiro (they are about even) for me.

Stun needle really was the training wheels of the game.
FromSoftware nerfed having two equipped in later patches.
Now you actually have to play the game and not cheese it.

This game's great fun. The gameplay flows really nice and has great customization allowing for really fun fights with a variety of cool stuff to do/witness. And the story is top notch heart tuggingly good.

You know what, I do disagree with a lot of the points at the begging, except the difficulty it is easy especially the first few missions. But this game was so much fun, and honestly to S rank the missions you really had to put effort and though into what you were doing. Saying that I think one of the weakness of From Soft is how they badly they cater for people that are willing to complete their games. They don't make it easy or give a helping hand, this game in particular could have really benefited from an approach where you want to 100% you want to see everything, because the ng+ modes are some of the best that FS has ever done.

I feel that AC6 puts you more on par with your foes then Dark Souls does where their HP is 10x times larger than yours in AC6 the enemy can hurt you as much as you hurt them if you give them the opportunity.

Personally I think the challenge truly comes from the PvP combat, since the other players are leagues beyond any npc the game throws at you both in skill and in wacky builds to match your own silliness. That challenge also forced me to really reconsider my builds, and now I just make a bunch of them for fun now that I’ve been pushed into it!
Also if you want the real challenge in single player, just try beating the game only using the manual aim mode hahaha

I have so far managed to squeeze (apparently) 151 hours out of this game (although I swear steam said 132 last night) by trying to stuff as many of the frame parts and weapons as I can into some form of decent build, which inevitably leads to a good variety of builds.
