Pope fights? Pope fights!
@The_Malcontented Says:
@5:35 "unsheathed his sword" in this case is not a euphemism, unlike in many cases involving John XII
@The_Malcontented Says:
The politics at the beginning of the video gets a bit convoluted, but Alberic was the son of Marozia and her first husband. Marozia eventually married Hugh of Provence, her third husband and the King of Italy, who become Alberic's stepfather. Hugh was from southern France which is why he was viewed as a foreigner. How did he become King of Italy? It's complicated, don't worry about it. For the purpose of this video, just know that he had already been crowned as King of Italy by the time he married Marozia and became stepfather to Alberic..... which Alberic was NOT onboard with, particularly after he got wind of the rumors that his stepdad was planning to have his eyes gouged-out, and which to Alberic overthrowing his stepdad (and his mom btw) and taking control. And all of that is just backstory! depending on when future Pope John XII was born, it's entirely possible all of this happened before his birth, and if not it happened when he was younger than 5 so a little kid

After watching this, I had to go online to check the story of the Pope who was put on trial after he had died - his corpse was actually dug up and literally put in the dock ..Sure enough... "Stephen VI, the successor of Boniface VI, influenced by Lambert and Agiltrude, sat in judgment of Formosus in 897, in what is known as the Cadaver Synod. The corpse was disinterred, clad in papal vestments, and seated on a throne to face all the charges from John VIII. The verdict was that the deceased had been unworthy of the pontificate. The damnatio memoriae was applied to Formosus, all his measures and acts were annulled, and the orders conferred by him were declared invalid. The papal vestments were torn from his body, the three fingers from his right hand he had used in blessings were cut off, and the corpse was thrown into the Tiber, later to be retrieved by a monk." (Wikipedia) There's even a painting of the scene done in the 1800s.

@222Bimo Says:
Kinda sounds like a Nero to me. Most sources we have are propaganda so actually we dont really know anything
@areiaaphrodite Says:
As far as I know, Benedict IX was the youngest Pope in history. We're not sure of John XII's age during his accession, but Benedict IX was definitely 18 when he became Pope, and his depravity was just as bad. (Fornication, wars, SELLING THE PAPACY...) he'd be an interesting video to do next.
@robertalpy Says:
The papal tiara can be worn in armor. Julius II wore the tiara into battle.

@LeoDomitrix Says:
Good old John 12. They really should've stopped using that name after him. (They didn't, btw, they went to John 23.)

Male pattern boners??? I don't know what that is and i don't want to find out! Sounds like a disease that strikes out at patterns. Either this joke was intentional or something went wrong somewhere with the closed caption. Either way this is a FANTASTIC START TO A VIDEO!!! XD

I’ve always heard that Pope Alexander VI was the worst pope, but you have created a good argument for John XII!
@SuperMrHiggins Says:
It's such an interesting time. What with even western europe not being completely christianized and the general chaos going on.
@valerie7008 Says:
Never trust a man with virtually no hair and thin frowny lips. It’ll never end well. Not talking about Simon. I’m talking about the pope.

Worst pope? Nope, the dude was an absolute legend. If I were him, I would've also sold all the relics and everything that disgusting faith has looted over millennia.

@BORNdischarged Says:
This isn’t supposed to be mean, but someone is going to take it that way anyway. None the less I found it pretty funny that a bald man is telling you about Keeps to stop hair loss, and yes I know it’s a paid advert. It’s still funny to me, it’s kind of like an obese person advertising a weight loss pill or drink.
@theWolfofVaca Says:
Which pope is good? It’s the oldest mafia surviving
@DeltaHorse22 Says:
Why would you give John XII-th the title that Francis unquestionably has earned ?
@loganmyall660 Says:
NOT ALL CHRISTIANS ARE EQUAL I do not mean this in an apocryphal, or hurtful way. What I mean is, not all that follow Christ or god have the same system of beliefs. Even within the same texts. I grew up in going to a Christian school, and was brought up in a first Baptist Church. It actually resulted in a lot of confusion in me because there was opposing views on scripture. As it stands right now I'm theistic agnostic. But there is argument in a lot of these comments as to whether priests, pastors, and presbyters were at what times abstinent or not. Eastern Orthodox, roman catholic, and others all have different histories almost completely.
@bentleestarr1575 Says:
Liutprand was extremely meticulous and only wrote those truths that could be substituted by more than one cleric.
@CyberDevilSec Says:
Oh for once it's a pope where the crimes are exposed. Trust me every religious leader has some kind of evil
@Wreckz_Tea Says:
Duracell bunny...
@mugogrog Says:
and just imagine having to accept that all these popes spoke the voice of god :p It just gets so much clearer that catholicism was about power and nothing else.
@dej7887 Says:
Really enjoyed your comments. Popes are always interesting, especially when they are rogues.
@onceamusician5408 Says:
well it does depend on what you mean by bad. Open licentiousness violence and debauchery? is there anything worse in a pope? i actually think that the grandiose insanity of Boniface VIII who claimed to be king of the whole world in that utterly blasphemous papal bull unam sanctam (1302) made him the worst pope of all
@jaypaxton2222 Says:
is there such thing as a good pope? 😂😂
