I've been a fan of JBP and his work since 2016.
I've followed his journey as a public intellectual closely. I would even go as far as saying I became drunk on Peterson to do a degree that meant I felt he could do no wrong (weaponising him to buttress my own self-righteousness). I have a much more realistic understanding of the man these days, in-part because I have a far more realistic understanding of myself.
I remember Gabor Maté being asked what he thinks of Peterson, Gabor notes that while he understands the attraction for Peterson he also senses a lot of "suppressed rage in him". I remember thinking this was nonsense, and that he's simply an assured individual who says things with deep conviction. I remember feeling somewhat irked by Gabor's comments (sure sign that I'd become militant in my "Petersonism").
Peterson is partly the reason I now see a Jungian analyst. Peterson is also partly the reason I read ferociously. Peterson has no doubt been a great force for good in my life.
However, I've since re-evaluated some of Peterson's uploads. I've watched several of his videos with friends and family. 4 of my friends on separate occasions expressed their concern at what they deemed a self-righteously combative side to Peterson. Simply too many of my friends have mentioned this aspect of Peterson's personality for me to go on ignoring it.
You can see it when he talks with disgust and contempt of the post-modernist types. You can see it when he talks of Communism and the far-left. You can see it when he talks of the ills of society and where we're going wrong according to him. You can see it truly pains him as he grimaces through his teeth (check out Aamon Animations 12 More Rules on YouTube for an excessive caricature). I think this side to Peterson is ugly (as it is in anyone else, including me) and has gone somewhat unchecked and perhaps misdiagnosed as assertiveness which seems to me to only be partly correct. It seems to be contaminated by what Gabor, I think rightly, diagnoses as rage. If you pause this video at literally any point you can see it contained within his facial expressions.

It'd be great if Peterson could sit down with somebody like Gabor Maté (physician & author) and discuss the subject of rage, contempt and how pervasive these emotions really are—especially where politics is concerned. I'd also like to see Peterson talk with some Buddhist thinkers on the subject of zealotry, rage & embodied compassion etc.
I wanted to write my thoughts out. Forgive the essay.
