What gets me is when Spanish wrecks are found the Spanish government is quick to say it belongs to them & will sue treasure hunters when their empire has been gone for well over a century & the treasure has been sitting on the bottom of the sea for even longer that & the gold & silver never rightfully belonged to them in the 1st place that & other governments sticking their hands out makes it not even worth looking for it if I found a treasure & was ordered to give it to Spain I'd toss it back into the sea before I gave them a single coin

Great video, Simon! One of the other commenters may have mentioned it - but one of Mel Fisher's investors was Frank Perdue, a famous (in the US) chicken businessman. In due course, he received his investment dividend - and gave most of it to charity. This was written up in the NY Times just a few weeks ago.

The Mel Fisher Museum is one of the best I've ever visited. We got the extra tour of the restoration center. We were able to hold artifacts right out of the electrolysis vats. It was fascinating!

As a multi generational Florida native and holder of a history degree from the University of Florida specializing in the history of Florida, I can tell you that we Academics look at Mel Fisher as a scumbag. I never had the displeasure of meeting the man, but I’ve met many of the principles from the odyssey group. They are just as scummy as Fisher and his lot. They have no regard for history, those involved with history, or even the environment. They pillage and plunder like modern day pirates. I wish them nothing but failure, and I hope they will go away with their tails between their legs.
