Israel, Russia, China, Iran: The World in Conflict | Walter Russell Mead | EP 326

????

Dr Jordan B Peterson and Walter Russell Mead cross continents in a broad discussion over world affairs. They go in-depth on the state of China's totalitarian regime, Vladimir Putin's plans for the war with Ukraine, the growing unrest under Iran's iron fist, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and how a push for American optimism is necessary to best face these emboldened challengers on the world stage. Walter Russell Mead is a writer, professor, and academic, focusing his efforts on international policy and affairs. He is the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College and taught American foreign policy at Yale University. Mead has worked as a columnist for publications such as The Wall Street Journal and was editor at large for The American Interest. His books include 'Mortal Splendor,' 'Special Providence,' 'Power, Terror, Peace and War,' 'God and Gold,' and most recently 'The Arc of a Covenant.' The biggest mistake that the west made was extreme libertarianism, thus made authoritarian regimes suddenly a plausible alternative, just like how China is trying to seize power through baiting US naive leftist netizens right now.
@Eliecerhdz Says:
"Western liberal ideas would not provide an environment where their kind of psycopathic power playing is going to be succesful". Do you think @Jordan B Peterson that conservative regimes are more prone or exclusively prone to totalitarism than liberal ones? This happened to be the common ground for dictators of very different backgrounds: like Castro, Franco or Gadafi.
@Unthoughtlessly Says:
Jordan Peterson is very intelligent in context of men women and its relationship On other issues he is a fool And western supremacist

Do you think the western democracy could sustain or develop without those whites' private properties like black slaves labors and natives lands and resources last 300 to 400 years? Don't be navie, western democracy is developed based on robbing others and sharing others resources " democratically."
@83licata Says:
The Abraham accords were signed while President Trump was still in office in Sept 2020, so yes and no as far as the instability of the USA helped pushed it across the finish line! Excellent conversation!
@83licata Says:
If it wasn't for the USA and other European nations giving billions in humanitarian aide and military aide to Ukraine, Ukraine would have fell in the 2nd month; hence the reason Zelensky scheduled a peace talk with Putin in April 2022 and was prepared to negotiate. It was Biden and the US state dept that told Zelensky to call of the peace talk. And since when is being a nationalist wrong, shouldn't a leader/politician push for policies of their country(their country first)??
@83licata Says:
Jordan Peterson said it, political freedom/liberalism comes prior to economic freedom. After all it's the liberalism, which allows for innovation, and that causes wealth! I agree with Walter Mead, people hate when business owners make a profit, but if the government comes in and does the same thing, like they do with socialized medicine, it's ok(doesn't make sense)???
@83licata Says:
China was in ruins and on the verge of collapse in the 1990s, because the 1989 Tienanmen Square protest and massacre, and impoverished communities. So, if it wasn't for the U.S. China Relations Act of 2000 that Bill Clinton signed and the World Trade Organization, the CCP would have more than likely fell.
@林昊宁 Says:
I now can see the oppression from western countries. Is your balance you mentioned somethings like British invasion which happened one or two hundred years ago? Is your balance something to continue to oppress Chinese technologies. The white have become a prividged group across countries enjoying highest average income and the imported products form developing countries where labour salary are worse than you know. Your white had done the black's human trafficking hundreds year ago, which is no doubtable. Your stolen artifacts are still keeping in the British Museum, and the regulation by which politics claim they will not return artifacts is amazingly reasonalizing the “dirty behaviors”. I do not know whether or not China will oppress the west, but I am 100% certain the west will oppress non-white if they can.

I think dr.Peterson should stick to psychology as his political views seem to be based on western propaganda. We have transitioned to a multi-polar world where the hegemonic tyrrany of the US is no longer welcome or needed. I have not heard such a level of ignorance and disassociation from reality in a long time except from politicians.

Some of the comments baffle me. JP IS a very intelligent person with a lot of thoughtfulness. Why do people believe that he has to know everything about a topic to discuss it. He's asking intelligent questions, using some of his belief in that topic and keeping an open mind. Isn't that what it means to learn and adjust opinions and beliefs? I don't see the problem here.

7:58: 🌍 The current international situation is characterized by a crisis of opposition between the Anglo-American system and an alliance of revisionist powers. 11:20: 🌍 Diversity of approach in the United States beats the efficiency of a monolithic view, allowing for continuous innovation and adaptation. 21:57: 🌍 The speaker reflects on the transformation of China from a country associated with famine to an economic powerhouse, but also highlights concerns about the Chinese Communist Party's control and the potential impact on international order. 32:49: 💡 The West's economic prosperity is built on the principles of liberalism, individual sovereignty, and the right to private property, which are lacking in centralized control systems. 43:26: 🌍 Putin's goal in Ukraine is to prevent Western expansionism and maintain Russian dominance, as a successful and prosperous Ukraine poses a threat to his power and vision at home. 59:09: 🌍 The Iranian regime benefits from having enemies like the US and Israel, and is unlikely to give up its hostility towards them. 1:05:46: 📚 The discussion revolves around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the history of the region, and the challenges of finding a solution. 1:16:51: 🌍 The historical record does not support the claim that Israel is a European colonial venture in the Middle East. 1:27:52: 🌍 The left's change in relationship to Israel may be due to Israel's shift from socialism to a free-market capitalist state, its military power, and its technological advancements. 1:47:47: 🌍 The Anglo-American system of a commercial capitalist global liberal framework has solid reasons to continue lasting, with advantages in creativity, vitality, and geopolitical positioning. 1:49:14: 🌍 Alliances and the principles of the Anglo-American relationship have historically played a crucial role in countering threats from ambitious powers and promoting peace and prosperity. Iran “justifies” it’s “clerical regime” by being the closest thing to a democracy in that part of the world. It has fiercely contested elections with a broader and wider range of political views represented on any Iranian ballot than on any American ballot. For the most part, their professed anti-Zionism and anti-Americanism is akin to the broad universal anti-Communist consensus among Cold War American politicians. The Islamic Reoublic came into being because of a popular revolution that overthrew an American backed despot that oppressed Iranians, sold out their natural resources to American corporations, and kept Iranians poor, with no voice in their government, and not free to practice their Islamic faith freely or in the public sector. The brutal dictatorship of the Shah was wrapped in the fashion and style of the American led “west” so of course a popular Democratic alternative to this oppressive American puppet government would be based within the national and cultural traditions of Shiite Islam. The Shiite islamists in Iran share a similar anti American anti imperialist and anti Zionist position as that of leftist secular Arab nationalists-although in spite of all their rhetoric Iran has never really posed a legitimate military threat to Israel. They’ve never attacked Israel, and in fact Iran was supported militarily and with intelligence by Israel to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars during the Iran-Iraq war even while both Tel Aviv and Tehran publicly ramped up their propaganda campaigns against their secret ally. Iran has a far more robust, developed, cosmopolitan and sophisticated and open culture than any of their Arab neighbors. Women have far more rights, ethnic minorities have far more rights, and there is far more public debate over policies and direction than in any other middle eastern country. Naturally the ayatollahs and the Shiite clergy have a great deal of political power- but they’re in the position they are in at the behest of the native population and governance, foreign policy, economic policy and law is generally handled by the elected presidency and elected legislative branches of the Iranian government. which- sometimes is far more liberal than the supreme religious authorities- and sometimes is far more conservative and “fundamentalist” than the ayatollahs. ( remember Abduminijad?) Iran has had its economy attacked, embargoed, and denied the opportunity to conduct international trade freely within the American supported international system of commerce. Of course it’s going to be anti-America and anti- Israel and attempt to trade with the likes of China and Russia and any Western European nation willing to raise the ire of their American allies. If it wasn’t for an economic policy that favors public ownership of the nation’s natural resources and seeks to use its petroleum revenue and profit for the interests of the Iranian people- there is very little that would not make Iran a natural American ally. Compared to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States- Iran has a larger, better educated, more dynamic and potentially richer population/ consumer base. Their values and messy democracy is far less foreign than the brutal extremist Wahhabi dictatorship in Saudi Arabia. Saudi’s foreign policy has supported wasabi extremist groups that throughout the Middle East have been violently anti American, brutal to minorities, women, and cosmopolitan educated folks. Iran on the other hand has generally supported secular Arab and moderate Shiite forces in the Islamic world. Iran is not a terrible despotic dictatorship. It’s a messy complicated ancient civilization with a large educated populace- legitimate interests in their own neighborhood- and a far more reasonable foreign policy based on sound national interests than the absurdity Sunni extremism in Riyadh…there are a lot of Iranians. Their demographics point towards the continual growth of their economy along with their population- they’re not going to tolerate murderous genocidal wahabbists in Iraq or Syria- they’re going to support moderate Shiite Arabs like Hezbollah in Lebanon and secular left leaning Arab nationalists in Syria and Iraq and Palestine against Israeli aggression and extremist Saudi/Pakistani supported groups like Al Qaeda, the Islamic State, Al Nusra, and whomever else next grows a mustache and publicaly executes folks based in their ethnicity or gender.

The discourse is based on a fake scholarship that was built on a colonial propaganda. All of your assumptions are biased culturally, religiously and politically. Every word was forged through filters since the very short history of the modern western hegemony. You never acknowledge any political, administrative or scientific knowledge for Muslim and Arab civilizations. The words are will designed and chosen. The history and geography you base your arguments on is that was written by a power to justify its existence and actions.
