I can't recall being taught anything about 'sexual practices' in school. There was a small component on sexuality in a couple of grade nine or ten health classes, not a whole course, that focused on the basics of reproduction, and the ethics of sexual relations in social context--which was fine, though most of my classmates knew that stuff already (this is in the 1960s). I don't remember any controversy about the material, nor any specific reference to homosexuality, though the prevailing attitude among my peers seemed to be that as there's nothing more individual and personal than sexual attraction, attempting to legislate who people's sexual partners could legitimately be was futile (children excepted, of course).
The real issues are when students should be introduced to the topic of sexuality, and whether the course material should contain, or even be guided by, an ideological component. The answer to the first question is socially contextual and certainly debatable; the answer to the second should obviously be an emphatic no. As a retired reference librarian, I would suggest that designating certain library materials off-limits for children doesn't qualify as censorship, any more than preventing children from driving motor vehicles qualifies as censorship. The children will graduate to driving and browsing everything libraries have to offer soon enough; these aren't the only areas in which patience and learning a few basic competencies have to come first.

I really like Jordan Peterson’s opinions usually but his explanation on why adolescents can’t learn about gay relationships and straight relationships that pertain to sexual relationships when they’re learning about sex was “we just don’t know the outcome of that”. I’m a gay woman and I wish I was taught about sexual health for gay women in school, because we do exist and we aren’t some minuscule number of people in society. Instead I had to fumble my way through things and had no idea how to have safe sex like I do now.

Word reading has a place. I am dyslexic and had years of phonics and special ed and never picked up how to read and stayed at about a 1st grade level for all the time I was in public school. In 6th grade, my dad finally got fed up with what was happening in school and pulled me out to home school. He had been a Japanese translator and was aware that symbolic languages have far lower incidents of dyslexia so tried reteaching reading with each word being treated like a symbol. It worked very well and I was reading at a high school level after 1 year. This was before "word reading" had a name. My dad had also been dyslexic and my grandma had actually had to work with him using the same concept back in the 1950s. Just because this has worked great in my family, does not mean it works for everyone.

Education costs have gone up 5000% in the past 50 years, and the quality keeps going down. I learned at a young age that school is shite. How? Well I'm Dutch, so the first language you learn is of course your native language. I was in group 3 of elementary school when in about 2 or 3 years the way we had to spell certain words changed 4 times.... If you really want to even give a toddler a reason to distrust EVERYTHING you teach, maybe that's the exact way to go about it. I didn’t learn anything about breastfeeding or what that was supposed to look like - imagine being completely unaware of an everyday sort of function your body is capable of! When I discovered breastfeeding it was like discovering my neck could rotate 360 degrees, and I just never knew because I was never told to try it. Also, we are taught CPR, but there is absolutely no knowledge of what to do should you find yourself giving birth outside of a hospital setting. Maybe instead of promoting abortion, if women had instead knew some basics about birthing at home/side of the road, you would have put a dent in the number of ‘all those women and children who died in child birth’ 🤷♀️

We fail because we try to fit our kids into a box. JBP has said so before. Not one way to teach. Grandin understood that many of us think visually. I argue what was missed is that we do not all think the same. We are atypical if you like. We need to offer alternatives. Recognize words like dyslexics must, and how advanced readers do, but teach others who need to slowly learn to interpret the letters. I argue giving kids audio books, as a dyslexic uses to overcome the inability to read thus rely on recognition reading. Audio books, and e books(great for research) and physical books. Problem solved, kids learn to read, learn to learn ,and learn t think, and we re-shape our future.

I am a child that lived through the pandemic going to public school in New York State yes a lot of the rules were weird backward, even in some respects sorry I can’t provide specific examples. I wasn’t really that interested in wider landscapes at this time, it was a weird time oh, so you telling me that I can go to the movies but I can’t have an education that isn’t a Zoom class? Strange.
Also, something that I have just realized upon viewing this video, the school resource officer knowing that he was there and knowing where his office was was a very good thing for me considering that I think this is true in almost every school and it makes sense from a security standpoint kids are not supposed to be on at all teachers can’t be I guess that has some with you with the culture, but at least someone was trained and armed and because he was a police officer he open carried I really wish that we could do that in New York. Not only from a tactical standpoint, but from a moral standpoint, my opinion. Anyway.

On the topic of the failure of the public education in the US there is an excellent book by Thomas Sowell. It is called Charter Schools and their enemies and goes into the political dimension of the development of public and private education. It shows how democrats contribute to making the situation worse by being cowtowed by the teachers unions whose political support they need.
Also, it might touch on how conservatives are letting that happen even though it also has many examples of initiatives going against it.
