So it appears Tesla found a bug in their app after watching this video that accidentally counted all production and usage totals as DOUBLE their actual numbers. Doesn't affect my payback timeline calculations, but it does make more sense that I was seeing ~4000kWh of production in a month, not 8000 🤓

"I think Ill go solar!" *Needs new roof to support panels *Needs rewiring and inspection up to solar panel code *Needs foundation inspection for integrity for new solar panel wright *Labor, Installation, parts maybe later...
@23CHILT Says:
You haven't factored in the opportunity cost of that capital. $100k in your solar is 100k not sitting on your home loan redraw or in a savings accoint or shares etc. Conservatively, that prob averages out at 3k /year opportunity cost, so add another 30k to the cost of the system over 10 years, and pushes out your pay back timeline.

I have a 10kw array of 23 panels. I’m just north of Rochester, NY, in Canada. My solar income for November to Feb is abysmal. I earned $5 in Feb and that not net metering. My arrangement is to purchase everything from utility, sell everything to utility. That way gov charges me taxes to buy and charges me taxes to sell. I wish there was a good roof turbine, like a roof vent, that generates because then winter and night are not the same factors. But if I put both my consumption and sale together, there is a $1200 plus I can put towards the original cost of the solar setup in addition to net zero electricity. So, the system will be paid in 15 years. Don’t forget, I have to pay tax on the electricity income. The gov is doing better than I am. They get most of the earnings. My system was installed in 2013, it earns the same amount every year +- $200.
@PHmaddnes Says:
@Marques, Any chance you could do a long-term update?
@MrBD81 Says:
So, there’s no way to cheat the system. They just want and need our money to keep us miserable! Thanks DWP

What if the sun goes out, pally? Then what? Stick to gas. It's safer.
@Röy_xx3 Says:
We need an update on this!
@MiroslavSzorad Says:
and how is temperature under that solar roof ? you have to run airco nonstop i believe
@martintroianov7953 Says:
This thing cost crazy amount of money and we return to point one if you are rich or super rich you pay less if you are poor person even if you have the money to buy this system you will say nothing because this system will not work after 10 or 15 years and will break from time to time
@geirleirvik1478 Says:
Consider the Investment you still pay - a lot for your power until it. Is paid off. Then there is service.
@Pete-x9z Says:
I wanted to get Tesla solar panels, because they’re part of the roof structure. Not extra weight sitting on top. Having older house. The roof shingles needs to be replaced. Before installing solar panels. Solar panels increases taxable property value and home insurance costs. Installation cost may be included. But not the licensing, parts, maintenance and other repairs. To be useful battery bank should be included in to the system. That’s the most expensive part.
@shanet7511 Says:
As someone who is switching to EVs (gas/maintenance costs savings compared to other vehicles of similar performance), already needs a new roof (received 3 estimates at $20-30k) and wants to install a generator ($10-15k Guesstimate+ maintenance) this could make alot of sense. I also live in a fairly sunny area and have a large one story house with a fairly basic roof layout so I can get plenty of coverage. Now my next hope is for Teslas to move to an 800v ultra fast charging setup and upgrade their batteries to support ~500 miles range like the Silverado EV and Lucid Air are capable of. Also wouldn’t mind a 2/3 row midsize crossover like the X but without the stupid falcon doors (only reason I bought a Y).
@callmebigpapa Says:
Seem like someone could skip the aesthetics and do this for 15k from Signature solar and get a 2 year roi. That said it is a super cool install and they look great.
@Daofro0 Says:
How about a review again of this product after years of use? I agree with someone in the comments about revisiting this.
@antiechelon Says:
We have a government that take the extra electricity and pay for it .

@Rick-tb4so Says:
Nothing but scams.
@milliondollarhomesboston Says:
With the net metering, did you really make use of the Tesla batteries? I’m going through the exact decision now - battery or no battery with net metering. Boston area
@GregNino Says:
Realtor here in Houston for over 20 years. Solar panels are typically deal killers for residential real estate transactions. I've yet to see one scenario where a set of solar panels have increased the value of a home. The added debt is an equity vaccum. Home buyers have a lot of options, so taking on 3-4 extra hundred bucks a month simply isn't good math, especially if you consider the slew of other issues like tree shade, cost to remove & replace the panels for a roof replacement (4-5k) along with hail & windstorms. And most of the time if you don't call the overpriced solar guys "preferred roofer" you will likely void the warranty. The mortgage company will also factor in the extra monthly cost + you still have to appraise. Too many ppl have been led to believe that if they add a 60k set of panels that their homes value will increase by that same amount ... or even more. Look at compareable sales in your neighborhood before talking to any solar company. Having your home sell in foreclosure or through a short sale because you wanted to charge your car in your unsellable garage is terrible business. Be well informed.
@Democracy-vr9kb Says:
why don't you make a video on Tesla solar after 2/3 years with numbers

@harleykervenschery2791 Says:
I think you should do an updated review for 2026.
@whate1se Says:
the answer is in the first 10 seconds of the video btw and u can stop watching
@ritvikreddy5405 Says:
the problem I feel with making the mass transition possible is that , its advantages are too good to be true and our instant psychological response is to find a caveat with it and amplify it so much as the advantages. we need more mouth of word to make it come true .I personally have done my part by getting 2 EVs. anyway EVs are gonna win sooner or later.
@hotarobin1 Says:
Great review!! Thanks for being transparent and sharing your own experience which opened up a good measure of your privacy only for some to try and use it against you.. Anyways, I am seriously considering the EcoFlow Deltra Pro Ultra X primarily because of the much lower price point resulting in a much quicker ROI (potentially) - you have given me good for thought. I have struggled to justify these solutions in the past purely because, in my head, it's like paying a massive advancement on my light bill for a net zero electricity bill and I simply couldn't see past that. EcoFlow makes it a lot more palatable and I am thinking of it primarily as a backup with neat additional functionality.. I do like the comprehensive look of the Tesla app though..
@EmanuelRodriguez-u8h Says:
I just checked it out they asking alot of $$ i rather pay may monthly bill😂

Consider installing a Bosch Inverter Heat Pump. Very efficient and quiet.
@kw2470 Says:
total cost - did you subtract the cost of 'regular' new roof shingles?
@kauaikit Says:
NO……as the ROI takes around 25+ years, for a commercial install, while the cost of a DIY is going down! DO IT YOURSELF, then the ROI is around 7yrs. 😅
@lasselasse2440 Says:
Your appliances must be extremely inefficient, or you're running them unnecessarily. 54,380 kWh per year is a joke. We're a family of five and our consumption is just under 6,500 kWh. And that's with 7 monitors + 1 "large" OLED TV, 3 PCs, 1 PS5, 1 surround sound system, 1 large dryer, 1 large washing machine, 1 dishwasher, and all the usual stuff like the refrigerator, freezer, stove and oven, microwave, and kettle. Everything runs every day, sometimes for several hours at a time. And then there's my electric car, which I also use every day.
@billy_cross Says:
So I don’t have to watch the video. I don’t have to listen to how successful you think it is. I can just without any argument. Tell you that owning anything let me rephrase that renting anything that you might think you own from Tesla is not a win for you and I guarantee it’s full bullshit. Anyway, there’s absolutely no way unless you disconnected from the grid there’s no way you’re not paying the electric company money. There’s no way to get out of it in most cases. Hell even if you shut your circuit breaker off your main circuit breaker off because you’re gone for you know a month or whatever you will still pay at a minimum a fee to reconnected to the electric company and unless you disconnected completely, which most people do not do they always need that back up you’re paying money for electric electricity in any case owning anything connected to Tesla in any way means that it cost you more than it’s worth
@ajjumenasagi1004 Says:
Informative!!
@SPER1 Says:
Can you give us an update video and the state of solar in 2026? It's an interesting topic and I'm sure people would love to hear about your experience in the last 3 years, where the industry is now and what's coming. Hope you get to see this, and thank you!

Crazy to see the government has $30k to help a rich guy install a solar roof on his oversized house, but regular folks can’t afford childcare or a good school in this country.

I also need to know two years into this now you’re three The batteries, your power walls they have a limited lifetime before you have to replace them. How much is it to replace them and what is the lifetime that they are expected to run?
@shawnaustinjohnson Says:
I just had my new build house quoted, and it came back at $860,000 for this roof, whereas a standard stamped metal roof is at $72k!!!
