3:29 I gotta say, I don’t understand the value of removing color as a visual cue to which icon/app is which. macOS removing color from the Finder sidebar was an equally baffling decision, and to this day I’m just a little bit less efficient because it takes me just a little bit longer to pick out the right target reliably.
A better way to improve the visual aesthetics of your home screen would be to adjust the saturation, or to make subtle tonal shifts, so that the icons fit together better.

The debate between iOS and Android is so old. Yes, Android could tint icons before and you could make your own grid. Cool, good for you. It’s as annoying as when iOS users were reminding everyone the entirety of Android copied iPhone OS at the start — who cares. Competition makes both better. Apple is doing it now because they care more about doing things well than they do about doing things first. I appreciate that immensely about Apple, and it really shows in UX.
Tinted icons look pretty awful on iOS, in my opinion, same as on Android. The dark mode icons make sense, but as much as I enjoy dark mode on all my devices and websites I do not want dark icons on my iPhone and iPad.
Ultimately, the bottom line is this: yes, iOS got a feature that Android has had for awhile. Again, who cares? Teenage users, mostly. For the rest of us: Apple devices can now do it too. That’s good for iOS and doesn’t hurt Android. At the end of the day, nobody who thoroughly thinks things through switched to Android for tinted UI elements and freely aligning their home screen icons. (Again, except teenagers)
