Can you access the NAS when connected to other networks?

This x86 NAS will use more power than an ARM SBC if that matters to yu.

Hi Chris, can you advise which Asset you use from Balena Etcher. Not sure if you used wndows or Linux, plus portable of installer. Thanks
@Stephen...-cu9nj Says:
@stephen. Great video. I have just recently purchased a mini pc for my small business and wondered how I could keep all of my work files separate from my personal files. I came across your video and was surprised how easy it would be, you explain this so well. I am not a wiz on this sort of thing but feel capable. I purchased another mini pc (B1 plus just for this purpose) just like the one in your video, cost £72. One question that I cannot seem to find an answer to is, Can I connect the network through Wi-Fi rather than ethernet cable? Also, after looking at your other video on the B1 plus you advised that the SSD storage wasn't that great and to use the usb 3 port, would this be ok to use as a stored drive for the server. Thanks

Good vid, thanks

I tried instalando a 1tb Kingston nvm. It fitted perfectly in the slot but it wasn’t detected by the Bmax. I have seen other comments of usars having trouble detecting their ssd. I don’t think it is very compatible.

Hi Chris! I've been looking to do one of these for a long time and it seems I'll be able to with your instructions. A quick question : Is it possible to connect to a NAS directly using a ethernet cable between the two machines, without going through the router?

Can I use a mini-computer with a Synology NAS attached to serve media to my Sony TV (to take advantage of the more RAM of the mini that would stream large media files)? Thanks for your videos.

Bloody brilliant! Thank you, Christopher. My first time watching one of your videos. Subscribed. Cheers!

Does open media vault support zfs and raid?
@EgoChip Says:
I really need to try and figure all this out, because I am sick of always transferring files all over the place. But the plus side to how I currently do things is that I at least have multiple copies of most things, in addition to backups. You have to keep on top of backups if you store everything in one place.
@rmcellig Says:
Thank you so much!!! Great video. Would I be able to access my NAS server over the internet and maybe save some money from using cloud sharing sites?
@Tlacoyo59a Says:
Why I see so many messages saying SSDs are not recognized by bmax? Only integral works.

I'm sorry to ask....what program did you use to create an image of windows?
@ranger5388 Says:
Chris, I kindly ask to respond to my question 11 days ago. Meanwhile I purchased an USB interface for M.2 SSD. I checked that SSD I installed in the B1 pro. It runs perfect linked to my linux notebook - via USB3. But it does not show up (e.g. as /dev/sda) on the B1 pro. I checked the USB interface on the mini pc as well by plugging in a 64 Gb stick. And, well this is listed directly in the devices table. So what finally avoids the M.2 SSD to show up in the same way? regards,Wolfram

Why you just don't install windows on Mini PC and share the hard disks and access them throw network, instead of all this complex procedures ????

Excellent video instructional, Christopher! I'm teetering on the verge of escaping the online cloud with a NAS, and I'm also teetering on the verge of analysis paralysis in considering my options. But you always help me TREMENDOUSLY! Green text, black background = nestles me softly into my Commodore 64 comfort zone, my RUN magazine open before me, patiently entering "Oregon Trail" line-by-line because as a broke 14-year-old I hadn't been able to scrape up enough yet for my 1541 drive (with No2 pencil "legs" for ventilation). No, that wasn't the "factory" text color, but if you POKE a Commodore, you can work wonders.😉

Thanks for all the great videos - been watching for years. Quick question about this one.. I bought a Bmax for this and have it up and running following your detailed instructions - but it seems to sleep or hibernate after some time period as I have to go reboot the machine and all works again... Any suggestions?
@Ind4.0 Says:
Thank you for the tutorial. Do you recommend using OMV or NextCloud Or TrueNAS or UNRAID or Proxmox? There are too many options. Couod you briefly explain their main differences in your opinion?
@ranger5388 Says:
Dear Chris, your video made me curious about having my own little NAS in my home network. Yesterday my Bmax B1 plus arrived (N4000/8 GB RAM/128 MMC). I also ordered a 1 TB PCI M.2 2280 drive which could easily be fixed in the corresponding bay. The installation process of OMV went fine. My router provides DHCP. To address the NAS with one of my computers is successful with the http-numbers 192.168.xxx , not so with "openmediavault.local". Q1: any reason for this? But my main point is: I do not see the extra SSD! So I can't format it to create a file system. The disk display only shows the system disk with some 116 Gb. Any advice from your side to solve this issue? kind regards, Wolfram (from Germany)
@pixelsafoison Says:
Given than eth is the bottleneck, you can probably get away with a dongle and some self-designed 3D printed mount for two 1TB drives (mirrored) and now you have a nas you can reliably trust with all but the most critically important of files

Thank you for your excellent video tutorials! I would like to ask you a question. - would it be possible to mount a Veracrypt encrypted drive on OMV NAS? - unfortunately there are no tutorials about this :( Thank you in advance!
@gskeller Says:
What, no miniDLNA plugun??
@dubrovink66 Says:
Chris - can you confirm OMV is using SMB v3 ? (Am considering replacing an older NAS with SMB v1 by a DIY OMV installation on a 775 PC with 4GB; as I was informed SMB v1+2 are unsafe.)
@powersource1988 Says:
This is wonderfull! I now found my solution. I was just wondering, since you login to the machine via a local link. How do other users for example, login to their account a/o the machine when they are not on the same network? My goal is to setup a machine and share it with my friends. So we can have a personal cloud + a shared one for lets say music a/o photo's, accesable via the web on mac, windows linux (and android?) machines. Thanks in advance sir \
@jackbriant1244 Says:
This is well explained and as a PC guy myself, I was considering turning my Ryzen 5 5500U Mini Desktop into a server for file storage so me and family members can save any not to personal documents. I say that as I don't know if files get encrypted on the fly. I would like to see if it would be possible to have a log file on who accessed what (for safety and privacy reasons) and have individual drive partitions for each member. If this sounds complex, I apologise.
@tomnel Says:
This is timely, I've just found there are dockers I can't install on my odroidHC1 omv install as they no longer compile them for armv7 only arm64 so time to move omv to one of these mini-PC's
@escheytt9326 Says:
Chris, Based on your video, I bought a 64 bit mini and added a 1TB M2.SSD and 16GB Ram. Please advise if it will run OMV following your video process. I really do not want to get into complications associated with fixed router IPPs, etc. Thanks and regards,
@faithastro Says:
Another triumph in simple to follow info - Thank you. Would it be OK to use a SD card instead of USB drive?
@peterschmidt9942 Says:
Thanks for taking the time to explain a bit about OMV and installation. Most videos I've watched on the subject seem to gloss over it and next thing its up and running LOL. I've already got a QNAP NAS, but I wanted to have a play around with a mini PC and some open source NAS software like OMV or FreeNAS to see how it holds up to my QNAP.

Wondering if this would be good to Velcro to back of TV 🤔 Then media storage is available to display on it 😮
