I kinda disaggree on the mini pc outlook. Strapped for cash I bought one. Was supposed to go up to 4 MHz but the thing is so slow, its barely usable. I upgraded the memory thinking that would fix it but everything needs a gpu now and that is not upgradable. I'll only buy machines that have slots from now on.

Time to go full on Linux over Windows

Pushing toward an MPU? More like pushing older users (like me) into installing an alternative OS! Looking at Linux, or even going back to Win 7, so I can continue to run all my old software.

Great video as always !! I have a mini pc (a intel N3050 to be exact) that I want to turn into a HTpc because for my office use is very limiting , is it worth to keep it aroung?

My highlight for 2024 was trying the SteamOS clone Bazzite on a regular desktop computer. SteamOS has been great on a handheld, but it probably makes even more sense as a lounge room gaming box hooked up to a TV. It's truly bizarre using your desktop computer as a console -- it's like using a DVD player instead of playing a DVD on your PC, it just _feels_ different.
@CherryParkComputers Says:
I'm astonished that more people don't use mini PC's. For most office based tasks that don't include video editing/rendering, or hardcore gaming, what used to be Intel NUCs (now ASUS) are powerful enough, WITHOUT the power consumption of a tower.

What about privacy? Is that NPU in these AI PCs going to analyze everything you do with your PC, and send a concise, tidy report back to Microsoft, Apple, et. al. ? Thanks for this concise, brilliant discussion on personal computing going forward. Great video.

Photo pee-ah sounds better than photo-pee. I'm happy with Pinta. It respects dark mode in Zorin but then everything does. That's one of the things that keeps me with Zorin.

Mr. Barnatt, your YouTube channel is a late discovery. I began my career in 1975 and find that your expertise still informs and enhances my enjoyment of the art and science of Computers. Thank you, and best wishes for the year to come.

I wouldn't be surprised at windows 12 requiring an NPU. Gotta run Recall 2: Even More Invasive Edition somehow.

nice, thanks, I completely agree on unnecessary AI hystery replacing search ... good old altavista-style with logic operators was VERY good; it died near 2011 or so ... but now we have messi heap ))

AI is so misused now and Google is one of the worst culprits. Even the police trying to use AI cameras to identify drunken drivers? How does that work?
@joseluiscuetoferrer9627 Says:
It is very true the issue with Windows 10 to Windows 11 update. I couldn’t update my windows 10 PC from 2015 to 11. The only solution was to install Linux Mint 22 or I would have to spend 500 dollars for the cheapest CPU, Motherboard, and memory to install Windows 11. Though, I have two mini computers with Windows 11 and one laptop. All the rest of my computers and laptops are with Linux.

Hi Chris, new subscriber. Your videos are incredibly informative and helpful and have helped me upgrade an old 2013 laptop using windows 8.1 to Linux mint cinnamon. Congratulations on the new channel I hope it is as popular as this, all the best for Christmas and looking forward to the new year. Thanks
@GunTech Says:
I think there should be an option in all search engines to not show summaries, and also to search for exact words and phrases (using quotes doesn't work correctly). It's almost hopeless now to find something specific with the growing amount of texts online.
@eddielegs344 Says:
Will only get worse in 2025 Microsoft is off track and Linux I think is jerk no matter what distro. Also Windows 11 is a drama and won't work out, I'm kinda done with computers after 45 years. AI demolishes the internet further just like geo politics and those crappy Black Hats

Another great year. Looking forward to next with your great work. But what happened to the end of year reflective walk in the park, with flask, sandwiches chat with the ducks, and being chased by seagulls at the beach, that were treated to every year ? LOL
@Ray-wt6ur Says:
The latest is Microsoft has relaxed their hardware requirements for Windows 11.

@daemiax Says:
Although Photo-Pea is pronounced as you claim it is, I would rather call it something that sounds closer to utopia, than a bodily fluid :D Also, there is no Windows 12, unless you have some insider information that I ( for no particular reason what so ever ) haven't got the access to.
@cageordie Says:
I wouldn't touch Harmony OS with yours. Surely an MPU is a cut down MMU? Which everything has? The ARM CPUs used in GM car dashboards use the MMU to isolate Linux, Android, and Green Hills Integrity, which is the host OS for the other two. The problem with AI is that it is shitting garbage all over the Internet.
@1invag Says:
With regards the windows 11 update. I stated on your channel a couple of years ago now probably, that the i9 9900k wasn't compatible with windows 11. Turns out that wasn't true, there was a couple of settings in my systems bios that needed turning on to make it work. I can't remember what they were specifically now, and I struggled to figure it out at the time because all motherboard vendors have their own seperate terminology for these things and so it was a case of trial and error to figure it out. I did intend to update my original comment on that video clarifying things at the time but I couldn't find which video it was I made the comment. This seemed like a good opportunity to clear up that misconception... im still on windows 10 😂
@Bazza1968 Says:
The Mac Mini M4 still cannot run Zwift in "Ultra" profile just "High"....£600+.....For 1/5 of that I could still buy (S/H)an Acer Veriton M2631G, a SATA SSD and a GTX1050Ti graphics card requiring no PSU upgrade that would out perform it on Zwift!!
@Bazza1968 Says:
I've just installed Windows 11 via Rufus on a Haswell i3-4160 PC I use in the living room, seems to be running fine and the differences don't seem that bad so far, and it's just done it's first update so all good- many thanks for your video that highlighted the options! I may install the Chrome OS Flex on my 11 year old laptop, just for the fun of it lol!!!

Hello, I have a question. 1. What does it imply that my HP laptop has AMD Radeon graphics and an Intel i7 7th gen processor? 2. Can the existing 8GB 1 PC DDR4 RAM be upgraded to, say, 2No PCs 16GB DDR4 (32 GB)? 3. Can a laptop run on two DDR4 Rams installed, such as 16 GB and 8 GB? 4. Since I want to upgrade from 2 GB to 4 or 8 GB of RAM on a 32 bit hp laptop will two 4GB DDR2 RAM modules operate on this 1.0 GHz ,32-bit laptop?
@SteveGouldinSpain Says:
I've been running Mint on my laptop for years, and I'm comfortable enough with it to replace Windows 10 on my desktop when support expires, however I've heard Linux installation on PC compatible hardware depends on security keys which are owned and issued by Microsoft. Is that really true? The implication is that at some point in the future (when Microsoft is forcing us only to run software vetted by their app store), that they could prevent future Linux installations.
@stephendotson9255 Says:

@oojimmyflip Says:
Congrats on the gold award, nice channel, I won't be moving to windows 10 or 11 or 12 come to think of it, I'm very happy running windows 7 ultimate x 64 on old 1990s gaming hardware, it's ultra reliable, as long as you rotate passwords frequently online security hasn't been an issue at all, I don't bank with my pcs online they are just media players for accessing the likes of YouTube and Amazon and storing thousands of compressed dvd files, to play in vlc media player. I did use Windows media centre with a digital TV tuner card years ago and stuck with windows 7 because the, media centre was abandoned in newer versions of Windows.
