You left out one detail: Garfield gave the nominating speech at the convention for Sherman. But he had been kept so busy that he had no opportunity to write a speech! He delivered the speech extemporaneously- and was so eloquent that it played a significant role in stampeding the convention.

Indeed one of the ablest men every to be president, almost on the same intellectual level as Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Despite his reservations about blacks, he was still a champion of civil rights.
