Orange Pi 5: Excellent RK3588S Octa Core SBC

Orange Pi 5: Excellent RK3588S Octa Core SBC

????

Orange Pi 5 SBC review, including hardware specifications, with demos running Ubuntu and Debian, and applications that include Chromium, GIMP, LibreOffice, Blender and Kdenlive. There is also discussion of the differences between an RK3588 and RK3588S system on a chip (SoC), with tests to show the implications for the speed of an M.2 NVMe SSD. At the time of uploading this video (Jan 14th 2023), the 4GB Orange Pi 5 was selling on Amazon.com for $82.99 -- https://amzn.to/3IOe2li Note that this is an affiliate link, and that as an Amazon Associate I earn a commission from any qualifying purchases you may make. The Orange Pi 5 featured in this video was purchased on pre-release from AliExpress in November 2022 for £53.03 plus taxes and shipping, which came to £74.35 delivered. At the time of making this video (in the second week of January 2023) the 4GB model with no accessories included was selling on AliExpress for $75.00. But as I say in the video, Orange Pi prices seem to change very regularly, and the board is sold in a lot of different packages. You can learn more about the Orange Pi 5, and download operating system images, from its web page here: http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/computerAndMicrocontrollers/details/Orange-Pi-5.html Please note that the above is not an affiliate or otherwise sponsored link, and that I have no association with Orange Pi. Hi Chris. Don't know if you have a orange pi5 pro but is it possible you can do a video on booting a orange pi 5 pro with an m.2 in CLI rather than desktop ?

The only complaint I have is no wifi, other than that it is a solid piece of hardware.

Now there is English this is how we understand each other ,or we could go back to grunting at each other , Gnome IN ENGLISH has a silent G SO if it was GGnome it would have two GGs I am saying you have followed a numpty into repeating GERNOME as I have been on other Linux sites and the correct usage of theis word has been used, just to put up ITS GERNOME as if its OK to invent new words like KAnife ,do we have an order of a ancient language or just a freelance free for all?
@JibunnoKage-YouTube-Channel Says:
And the OS images are ancient... which means no one is actively supporting them?
@Pein955 Says:
Maybe board is good, but the software is the ugliest softwrare, which I've ever seen. I was using orange pi 5 ultra. Their NPU module and work with it is just a pain. Some specific kernel modules are not supported by orange os (v4l2loopback for example).

could you edit a config file and force it to operate at pcie 3 like on the Rasp Pi 5:?

Hello and HNY.. Love your channel and have learnt a huge amount over the years... Quick question. Will a SBC allow me to feed a RTSP feed from a POE camera to HDMI out to monitor. I assume the SBC would receive the RTSP via ethernet cable from same switch as POE camera and then output to monitor via onboard HDMI... I am only looking to display one camera and do not need it to record any image. Is this doable..? Many thanks in advance... Rupert

Hi Have you heard about opi5 bricked?? I do not know how to recover it. 😢 Using rkdevtool always start in maskrom mode, even when no pushed button. ChipID not detected in advanced mode. No tfcard boot nor pcie-sata drive. No booting info under rs232 debug port. 😢😢😢

RPi 5 is out about a month, but it is behind of Orange Pi 5 which is out 9 months ago. Orange Pi 5 even looks cooler and doesn't require an active cooling for most usages.

I own an Orange Pi 5. It is now November 2023 and I tested the following Linux images: Orange Pi OS, Debian, Ubuntu. Here is what I found out: None of these are 100% functional right after install. The best right now is the Debian because it is the most fluid interface with GPU acceleration properly enabled and it makes a huge difference on my 4K display. The best environment is XFce and best browser Chromium. Gnome and Firefox are painfully slow in comparison. I tested the power consumption: around 7W when browsing the web with many tabs and videos open. ~10 Watts when recording 2 HD streams (set at 15fps) from v4l USB 4K cameras with "motion" + watching youtube at the same time. Impressive! Perfectly usable as an every day computer if you are not afraid to fix a few configuration issues yourself...

Unfortunately they decided to go with the mp4 gpu variant instead of the mp6. It could be a nice console replacement and good hardware to use for linux game dev. We are in 2023, almost in 2024.

Thank you for another excellent video Chris. I would be interested in a video evaluating a single board computer for use as a "travel PC". I tried that with a Raspberry Pi 4 2 years ago. Using a Pi4, HDMI connection to hotel LCD TVs and a compact bluetooth keyboard. Problem #1 was weak WiFi reception compared with Android phones Problem #2 was the laggy bluetooth keyboard. [I don't want to carry a full sized keyboard when travelling] Problem #3 was dropping the keyboard connection It was also slightly slow, although the 3 problems already described were a bigger issue. best regards Jeff

Tks fòr the unboxing. Since months the Raspberry Pi 400 has logistic issues (still as side effect of Covid/pandemics) and seems overpriced around 130-145 Euro in Netherland. obviously the orange seems an interesting alternative
@Garvandule Says:
Will it accept sata drives via usb and work as a NAS?
@novantha1 Says:
Interesting thought: Could you do a video on a simple ARM SBC cluster for code compilation, or perhaps common OpenCL tasks like blender renders? It would be a pretty affordable way to get a very efficient, fairly high core count system going, and is a probably not a huge jump in price once you've already got at least one SBC set up already.

Fun Fact: The orange pi 5 is faster than a Nintendo Switch

Does anyone have a solution for properly mounting a 2230 M.2 drive on the Orange Pi 5? I really am astounded that Orange doesn't give you mounting hardware with your purchase --- and regular M.2 mounting hardware doesn't work on this. Couldn't find anything on eBay or AliExpress, but than again it is difficult to know what the proper search terms to use are...

Really curious to see the performance of a HTML5 game (formerly Flash) that I've played since 2012 Kixeye's Battle Pirates, many have tried to play it on phones with varying results, depending on the power of the phone, but usually lags and crashes on Android, I want to buy one of these SoC's but I don't know if Linux or Windows variants could even run this HTML5 game, and if so how well?
@shellite Says:
You should do an update video, given that there is significantly more software support now including Mesa/Panfrost(fork) with GPU acceleration.
@dcc1165 Says:
You're going to make me go broke if I keep trying to buy all the hardware you feature in these great videos. :). One interesting feature of SoC is the fact that the chip allows us to see up your nose...lol.
@georgeandrews2839 Says:
If you were to choose a SBC for number crunching like World Community Grid or Rosetta @ home which would it be?
@1George2 Says:
very cool SBC! may be now with better SW support as well....
@alx8439 Says:
Unfortunately, it comes to hardware acceleration of everything in Linux - video decoding, 2D graphics, 3D graphics - you need to be a sort of advanced user to make it work right and troubleshoot successfully whatever issues there might be on your way. It's one of the fuzzy blurry topics in Linux with a very limited knowledge base, you can source from.
@dewaxlx4 Says:
How's the performance on cluster
