Blender Materials & Rendering Introduction: How to create stills and animations

????

Blender materials and rendering tutorial, introducing material allocation, shaders and nodes, rendering still images, setting the background, and rendering animations. This video follows on from my episode 'Blender Modeling Introduction': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsufneMOvWA The Blender Principled BSDF shader web page is here: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/render/shader_nodes/shader/principled.html Blender can be freely downloaded from: https://www.blender.org/ You can also obtain the free GIMP photo editor from: https://www.gimp.org/ And the free DaVinci Resolve video editor from: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve Note that I have several DaVinci Resolve videos, most recently including this review of DaVinci Resolve 18: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyzO2MTKwY0 In this video, I used the following Blender keyboard shortcuts: Render -- F12 Maximize area -- Ctrl-spacebar Toggle wireframe display -- Shift-z Duplicate object -- Shift-d After duplicating an object, press x, y or z to constrain movement to that axis. View select -- press the key below Esc (which is the tilde on a US keyboard). Insert keyframe in the timeline -- press i To scroll a menu bar, press the mouse wheel (middle mouse button) and drag. Your first video was about creating models for 3D printing. This second video seems more aimed at video production. Have you now decided Blender is not the best for 3D modelling?
@kleuner4622 Says:
You explain the whole topic very well. Everything is easy to understand. Thank you for your work.
@chrischti Says:
This 2 videos are so helpful, that's all it takes to get started. I watched dozens of other videos for nothing. Thank you so much...
@C-141B_FE Says:
This is the best tutorial series on blender. Thank you for putting this one together also!
@presidentskroob522 Says:
A very helpful hint : If you have a good GPU, when selecting your render engine as cycles, change from CPU to GPU and your render times will drop from minutes to seconds
@pauljcampbell2997 Says:
Wow, really good video Chris! Thanks mate! Its a pity there arent more videos from you on Blender, but i get it. The views on this one were down on the first. I see you use Davinci Resolve. I love it too!
@antonioiozzi291 Says:
Nice, easy to understand tutorial. Well done!!! Immediate Subsciption !
@theloniusbuddha2776 Says:
Holy God, you make the best blender videos I've ever seen. I'd love to see some videos on how to make assets for games and VR if you're up for it.
@Ayo22210 Says:
Great videos!

Is there any libraries to download models to blender?
@Ian-q8j8v Says:
Hi Chris - The two blender videos you have created so far have reignited my desire to get to grips with the software. All the other videos I have watched seem to be created by blender users, but not educators. As an ex technical trainer in industry, I recognise your approach as one I would adopt. If you do decide to create more on this subject, I am particularly interested in producing models for 3D printing with textures such as wood grain. Please keep up with the fantastic work you do.
@lolaswift111 Says:
Hi Chris, I just can't help making some video requests after watching the blender ones. I hope you'll consider making tutorials for 1. Substance Painter and teach us the fundamentals like in the blender tutorials. Should I say unfortunetly It is de facto industry standard tool for texturing 3d models. But just like blender, there are full of tutorials on youtube but most of them useless for beginners. Unfortunetly it's not a free tool. Wish Blender will be as good one day 2. Photoshop or Gimp, just the fundamentals, and especially when used in 3d art creation workflow. Learning Blender, substance painter and photoshop is the pain in the neck for lots of non-artist, like programmers/game developers who desperately need the 3d art skills. And so many are struggling and waiting for a life saver.

Hi Chris, after watching so many tutorials and learned almost nothing. these two videos finally worked for me. Many many thanks and any more blender tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
@sssmuuu Says:
Please part 3!
@Timedrivers Says:
Geat job and well explained....Didnt know that you could initiate nodes from the material menu without going into the shading editor or the geometry tab. W6DLB
@anguinan Says:
would be nice a video about how to apply physics to simulate mechanisms like gears, pulleys, etc.
@Spitbiteart Says:
This is amazing, Chris! Your videos are terrifically accessible. I found other Blender tutorials too confusingly presented to retain any learning from them. With your two videos I have finally actually learned and have begun to understand how to use Blender! Many thanks!

DICE is plural. One DIE, many DICE.
@kentjensen4504 Says:
You’re so brilliant. Your Blender videos may be the best introduction to this software I’ve seen.
@prometheushub Says:
Best blender beginner tips and tricks ever. Keep up the good work!
@catallaxy Says:
Another excellent Blender video. Your videos are the most concise and enjoyable on the internet. Thank you. I hope that you will continue to do more Blender videos. You are a natural born professor! Perhaps, if you wish, you might do an in depth video on how to use the material nodes in Blender. This is a fascinating but, bewildering topic, especially for an old geezer like myself. This has always been a stumbling block for me. Your pedagogical talent suggests to me, that you are the best person to take a crack, at this mystical topic. Thank you again.
@TheAnimeist Says:
There are so many rabbit holes to go down with Blender. It's a complex system. Chris, as usual does an amazing job of whittling the system down, and presenting what is needed in practical terms. Well done. Peace!
@seaofcuriosity Says:
More vedios on blender ? Even if you bring a paid course covering full blender, this quality of explaination will deserve it.
@danielkerryann Says:
Superb video, thank you 🙂

I've had learning Blender on my to-do list for well over a year, now I've finally gone and gotten my feet wet with it. I made some nifty lookin' dice! Got a feeling this is gonna be a lot of fun, thanks for an awesome tutorial!

May I know good computer specifications for blender

Brilliant, keep up the good work, more more more!
@leowang7893 Says:
your 3d graphic style is good. based on let the program parameter generate 3d obeject and texture. today some 3d game are too rely on use a jpg picture map on the 3d object. make the graph looks chaos and lost the 3d feeling.
@ColdIronGaming Says:
I'd love to see Blender Physics get covered by Explaining Computers.
@kharsair Says:
It will be cool if this channel can teach some parametric precision modelling in CAD software for 3D printing. Nevertheless, well explained!
@markdonnelly1913 Says:
Bloody awesome! Such a powerful piece of software. Another great video Chris.
@spiders-tours Says:
Great tutorial series Chris and hope some more of your near million subscribers tune in. Seems a heavy drop off after the first episode and perhaps your typical subscriber has no use for Blender, which would be a shame for the ones who do see a value in it. Anyway makes a real change from yet another SBC, which are getting a little monotonous - long may it continue.
@urielpelaezcdmx Says:
Excellent tutorial. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍🏻
@BarnokRetro Says:
Thank you for taking the dive into Blender for us! It's pretty crazy what you were able to do. I'm not sure I'd have the wherewithawl to to get good at it. That said, it's a very interesting topic and another great video!
@XolaniBarnabas Says:
Superb series Blender so far!! Please consider making a video on importing files from another CAD program with the intention of making a realistic rendered image. More tips on design with the intention of rendering would be welcome as well.
@KavorkaDesigns Says:
I didn't know Blender was set to 45 degrees, but I assume it is meant for 3D printing. As when doing so I always rotate it 45 in the software provided for the machine. the maybe a default setting in the menu to enable/disable it, or maybe select workspace type
@redmosquito50 Says:
Me again your explanation is easier for me to learn blender, can you please do more videos of how to on blender? As there's only 2 videos about blender, thanks,
@gregbowen617 Says:
Well, this is my second video of yours and you use three apps that I am attempting to learn! I have started dabbling with Gimp, but not DaVinci resolve yet so much fun to look forward to!. Thanks again from Melbourne Australia… 04:23 am.
@redmosquito50 Says:
Great teaching, and explanation and walking through nice and easy, best I seen yet of all other videos I seen with others, are you a teacher and in UK? I ask as I might have a great paying job for you in near future.
@kyoudaiken Says:
Very nice tutorial! Did you know that Blender can also be used as GIMP and Davinchi Resolve? It comes with image manipulation and editing as well as Video editing. It also can directly render into video files.
@ianhaylock7409 Says:
Dice is plural, die is singular. I'm sure Chris knows this and chose to say dice instead to stop the Youtube algorithm picking up him saying die, die, die, all the time.

Great Video Chris! Appreciate you explaining Blender so well. You do such a great job explaining things and go at a speed th a speed that gives you time to digest the information. Keep up the great work!!!

ME & Buddy just dreamed that it was "Raining Raspberry PIs" - Then ?!? - we woke UP! (Am I being GREEDY?!} lol " be HONEST!) 🙂
@nicholaspostlethwaite9554 Says:
Fine and good as it goes, but no way do you boolean the dots, terrible topography, and lots of skipped positioning. Yes it works but not a good way to do it. Camera movement, what a weird way to do that. 'Lock camera to view', N toolbar, view tab, use viewport controls, and the camera is moved to see the same as the view. Easy peasy. Yes I know you mentioned there were other ways, some like the walk/fly mode way, horid though, lol. The camera is in a sensible position from the default opening file, which is why your first renders of a default cube were in the camera shot! Nicely 3/4s on not dead flat front on, or some such thing that wouldn't show a 3D object at all well. Blender has a compositor that would make the image sequence into an animation.
@Colin_Ames Says:
Definitely an excellent tutorial. It would take many viewings of the previous video and this one before I could become remotely competent. On another subject, the National Railway Museum is a really great place to visit.
@sanketmanna8653 Says:
Please, teach more about creating animation, already loving this series.
@judsonleach5248 Says:
I have an HONEST Question, Sir! “ any idea where to buy a raspberry pi?!? - WITHOUT “selling a testicle”?!? - Hahaha! - (asking for a friend!) I thought they had all this crap worked out, Sir?!? - BEFORE we all die of “old age!” Lol - just saying! - cheers! - Judson & Buddy! :-)
@deliannebouma Says:
Thank you for this video! What laptops do you prefer for using blender? Thank you!!
@MekazaBitrusty Says:
Another fine example of great blender tutorials!! Thank you very much for making it. One minor criticism, the singular of dice is die. 😉
