Hi there I writte you from Argentina. I love your videos. I was wondering if I could send you a picture of and old laptop I saw on a TV show from the 90's so you can do a review (if you haven't already about it). What intrigues me is the fact it has something like a pointer device but it is on aside of the screen.
@francis400 Says:
The CMOS battery on my EE pc is flat as well so it goes through this palaver to boot as well. Shame they are not simpler to replace. Also does a flat CMOS battery affect the main battery life as it does not seem to be lasting as long?
@elixier33 Says:
This was my first laptop. That error message is likely related to hibernation or sleep not your battery. Its a space o. Your hard drive for all your data when it goes into hibernation. You were close it is related to apm advanced power management. X

This gets me recalled my Compaq N600c, with Pentium III mobile and 1024x768 TFT.

Small house or luxurious doghouse it doesn't matter! The design of this laptop is just beautiful. Well, it looks like a soap, but really I would appreciate if something charged with Intel 12th gen would sit on my desk! 😃😃

If you get evicted from you home you can just move into your laptop......weighs as much as a house.....math checks out
@MonkeyspankO Says:
That's a beauty! Quite the piece of luxury in 1999.
@elvissorna8861 Says:
This is super old school...and very neat I must say. Windows 7 was the last OS to feature this classic design, everything that came after sucked. The first laptop I'd ever seen was one of those Compaq presario thingies back in 2000, I always thought it had a very slim contemporary design for its time.

How did you record the screen on win98 And is there any options to use the internet again
@Christopher-N Says:
'Like' earned with the "small house" joke. ^_^ (7:10) I thought that bit of dust on the screen was on my screen, as I tried to clean it off.

I love the performance on my new M1 Macbook, but I sincerely wish that we still had laptops that looked and functioned like that Toshiba.

Chris, thanks as always for the great videos. I have a Compaq Armada 1590DMT purchased in 1997/98 w/ Win NT 4.0 and 84mb RAM. I plan to replace the current OS w/ Linux when I find the time. I look forward to seeing your future video on putting Linux on your Toshiba.

When the retro tag is used, I generally think of modern technology made to look like a 30 year old obsolete device. That laptop isn't retro; just obsolete.
@Tatar_Piano Says:
Will alpine linux work on it?
@namesurname4666 Says:
I found a dell laptop from 1998 in the trash, it was working but now suddenly doesn't boot anymore, it only blinks yellow light, so it's not an hard drive problem (probably), the keyboard sometimes would also stop working and work again after some time
@Codemantic Says:
I think Chris just flexed the fact he can lift a small house!
@johnjohnson4095 Says:
Loved this... 1999 laptop... The days of rushing out to buy the latest mag with the disk on to get some new software.. (I've still got Thumbs+ from those disks still running now) The squawking modem.... Home websites instead of comercial pop ups everywhere.. Knowing what 'Explorer' was for.. On the superfast 56k surfing all night with Voyager, SG1 and LEXX on the telly..
@weekal5515 Says:
I miss laptops build like small house with a keyboard witch is nice to type on, those square screens are a lovely way to type documents.
@duanegcanaday8575 Says:
That looks a lot like my toshiba tecra 8100.

I clicked on Linux survival guide and it took me here instead.
@Hunnter2k3 Says:
I still have a Toshiba Satellite Pro sitting to the right of me. This badboy was so hot it literally warped the backplate of its on keyboard, eventually forcing pressure on some of the arrow keys that they would get typed at the slightest nudge. I had to disable them in Autohotkey and remap them to Win + IJKL. 30GB HDD it had. But that also destroyed itself via head smashing in to the drive platter. I had zero luck with that laptop. Probably the most expensive disaster I've ever bought, 2nd to the Hudl 2 which didn't even charge half of the time and lied about that fact! Literally showed that it was charging and it wasn't doing it to charge. Exact same system I used with another tablet fine. Just how? How do you manage that? That's patently stupid.

My grandfather worked at Toshiba Brazil by then and he sold many of this machines. I remember the price to be U$5000,00 (but I can be wrong)
@warrenscorner Says:
I love those old computers. It is a shame what Windows has become. I gave up on Windows back in the Vista days and bought a Mac. Now I find myself more frustrated with Apple as they seem to have adopted the Windows philosophy of forcing me to update my machine every time I turn it on. Why don’t they just focus on an operating system that is rock solid?

Casio uses STN displays in their top of the lin watches!
@fattomandeibu Says:
Windows 98 and AOL Instant Messenger reminds me of 2 hourly blue screens with 30% chance of restart and having to cancel Scandisk on my old family computer from last year of high school until I got my own computer which come with Windows XP. I do miss Windows Classic massively, but I'm glad blue screens only happen during hardware errors these days.
@Saintbow Says:
If you need another Retro Laptop for review, I could send you my Dell D600, still is in mint condition. Still works, still has it's original battery, hard drive and disc drive. I pulled it out of mothballs last year and installed a lightweight Linux distro on it, and it hums along like the day I first got it. The badboy still has the factory Windows sticker with key on the bottom of it. I know you can nab them off of Fleabay for dirt cheap, but it was my first laptop and it has some good memories.
@ralphclark Says:
Somebody forgot to mention the two compactflash slots which were your only hope of getting connected to a local network.
@ColdRFusion Says:
Every computer should be weighed like that!
@stevep641 Says:
I forgot about all the noises old computers used to make. Hard drives spinning up floppy drives clicking and loading. Good nostalgic video
@pibbles-a-plenty1105 Says:
I would have loved to had a 1620CDS way back then. And Windows 95, 89, 2000, XP and 7 forever with Classic user customizable GUI. My more recent Toshiba Satellite is flimsy junk, the hinges fell apart. Windows 8 and following is a brutal assault against personalized computer usability. Rushing to the bottom.... And oh yes, the welcoming buzz of the floppy drive when booting up!
@maicon7777777 Says:
Very exciting to see this old laptop working. Your English is easy to understand. I feel like you are teaching all the time :) .
@uni-byte Says:
I had one of these in 2001-2004. I had to fly from Toronto to Thunder Bay (Canada) to meet with a client for 4 days. On the way to the airport I stopped for gas before parking my car. When I went to pay for my gas someone swiped my laptop out of my car. I flew to Thunder Bay and as soon as I got there I contacted my company, told them my story and they told me to go buy a new computer. I went to the best computer shop in Thunder Bay and bought the best laptop they had and it was this exact unit. So much for small town tech. I had to use this for 3 years before my employer agreed to replace it. I hated that machine. It just sucked! I would not event want one for nostalgic reasons.

Hey ExpalainingComputers, I was listening to your sore feelings about our latest Windows 10 and 11. May I ask you do a review on the latest OS's or Going through time from the beginning? Thanks for the trip down memory lane and excellent review presentation video.

I had a similar laptop once, a hand-me-down with ass battery life. My first Linux experience, because there was no way I was running NT 5 or 6 on it, nor would I want to run a DOS-based system on anything by then.
