I honestly cant see what their target customer is for this, with no USB3 and a 100mbit ethernet, while still being 50% more expensive than a Raspberry Pi. It seems to me to fall between two chairs and will appeal to absolutely no one. Like, "do you want to buy the recognisable brand name SBC Raspberry Pi, which everybody knows and has confidence in, or do you want this competitor which not only costs 50% more, but has 20 year old connectivity technology". Absolutely mindboggling.

I place this kind of cardboard casket top cover up, take upper box with both hands and shake up-down as fast as I can, even if the contents of the casket is light in and of itsels, the bottom box has enough of cardboard mass to detach and fall down on the table with its content.

So, this needs a lighter OS than Ubuntu, I wish board makers would stop with Ubuntu/Wayland, that a lone was using half the memory and I didn't see any gains. I removed Wayland, and installed XFCE 4 and it running great, video is working. I will admin the Android seem to be good, but some apps don't work work correctly because it flips like it's a phone. So, I am not impress. I love to see Debian or Manjaro running on it, I bet will be better.

Khadas is clinging to these 2GB RAM SBC. I will never understand why. Their marketing is puzzled between maker/smarthome-Stuff and "home server/media server"-things.
For the Makerstuff I would NEVER buy a SBC this expensive cause a simple arduino does almost everything you need on that end. And with everything on the home/media-server end, you need two things that Khadas SBC lack: Fast I/O Connections and RAM.

I know I'm 2 weeks late, so there's a good chance you won't see this.. but there's a small mistake (nothing that'll break Internet) right around 2:40 ish when comparing to RasPi 2gb. Now I realize it's not even possible to buy a RasPi4 @ msrp but if you could the 2gb RasPi4 is only $35... I'm sure you remember now them dropping the 1GB SKU and moving the 2GB down a price slot for their birthday! Once they're available again I believe it will make this VIM1s look a terrible value imo..

FYI, at 12:38 , 945MB "used" memory displayed is memory used by processes plus Linux disk cache.
If want to know how much of that is used by apps, run the "free -h" command and subtract "available" from "total" memory.
There is a nice site that explains this: "linuxatemyram", but I cant link to it somehow.

I can't speak for the 1s, but the Vim3 doesn't work with VESA computer monitors, belying the C in SBC, and Khadas abandoned the board at Ubuntu 18.04. The Pi family's success is due in large part to ongoing product support for older family members. Khadas is like Seeed Studios in this respect: cool looking closed source ship-and-forget tech w/ no future path. Pi 4 for $45? That was in 1950's-era dollars wasn't it?

You went into your swap space on Ubuntu. That will really slow things down. Rule of thumb, Ubuntu needs at least 8GB of RAM to operate at peak performance.
On my Linux development machine, I have 16 cores at 4GHz on an AMD CPU with 32GB of RAM. Overkill? Not for the research that I do.
Agreed that the Raspberry Pi 4 is better.

Sadly, i don't understand why Khadas Vim would bring this out when there are better TV boxes out there using the S905X3 with 4Gb ram and 128Gb emmc for the same money, with a true 1000Mb LAN, has USB3 and is available on Amazon, (with a free case). A much higher performing SoC. Or the same better chip with less emmc for 50 bucks. But again great video, thanks Chris. I love seeing you check these SBC's out.

One point regarding YouTube in this video.
On Android, you used a stand-alone YouTube app to get good playback.
But on Ubuntu you ran YouTube from within a browser which adds quite a lot of overhead on top of the YouTube playback.
I would recommend using the same browser on Android to run YouTube for a better apples to apples comparison.
