Greta idea to go for the cheaper M1, let me take a look at some retailers.. oh, the M1 is still $1000 for the base model in Europe. Cool.
@b0tterman Says:
I paid full price for the M1 when it came out. Now it's $650?!

This might be a stupid question but what do you do with the laptop after you make these reviews like if you just got them lying around can I have it like my school laptop is an old dell without windows activated and runs out in like 3 hours of use if you aren’t able to give it away algoods like totally fair just wanted to ask because who knows might luck out
@nandans2506 Says:
I don't understand why you would recommend macbooks for casual users. For people who really want a macbook, say a programmer, 8gb 256gb is simply not enough. They are getting way too expensive now. Hope snapdragon laptops come out soon and Microsoft takes wsl seriously
@LotusFlowerClips Says:
Buy base spec, have a tech shop upgrade the ram and ssd. Easy win. Apple thought soldering them would stop us... Nope

@musicchap Says:
Best bit is M2's price drop - any M1 would still be fine for most people anyway!

I mean Snapdragon X Elite is on the horizon. It has upgradeable storage,wifi-7, Bluetooth only ram is soldered. You can always run Mac Os on it unofficially, and community will bring that.
@Amor_Fati_ Says:
Don't get the 8gb ram version. Get 16gb of ram for the AIR

It's refreshing to hear someone say "if you are doing lightweight work, consider the older gear"

Honestly boggles my mind that apple is successful whatsoever. Total rip off merchants.
@alexxx2832 Says:
800 dollars to upgrade to a 2tb ssd. Meanwhile it costs 90 dollars for a 2tb ssd. They are charging 800 dollars for something that would cost you 90 if you did it yourself. Some laptops actually allow you to upgrade and install your own ram and drive but of coarse apple won't do that cus they can't milk you for more money. And what's up with this 8gb stock ram. Like are you joking! Your pretty much forced to do the 16 gb upgrade
@rtx_____ Says:
lol doing office work with 8gb is fine is considered a hot take? i am using a 2014 macbook pro to do all kinds of office work and it works 99% fine
@JimP-tc7gg Says:
The redesign that came with the M2/M3 is arguably worse than the M1. Build quality feels less solid, keyboard has less travel, superior top firing speakers were removed and then they added useless rubber feat that let the machine slide about all over the place. I couldn't care about minor chip updates, they need to make a better laptop first.
@matthewgonano636 Says:
I just got the m1 haha

Bought my first macbook a few weeks ago. Decided between M1, M2 and M3. M2 base model with reduced price was the purchase. More than satisfied.

There's also a question of support. How much longer will M3 be supported than M2 or even M1?

I found a M2 Macbook Air with 1tb ssd and 16gb of ram. Would you take the m2 with better ssd over m3 base specs? Editing 4k footage on Adobe Premiere regularly so the 1tb ssd and 16gb of ram seems better and I found a deal for a grand
@optalgin2371 Says:
Conclusion, apple is going down, next thing you know they'll charge you for the keyboard.
@el_if27 Says:

@sonny958 Says:
Thanks for calling out apple (and the industry) for the base models pricing. I totally agree, honestly in 2024, 256gb/8gb while are totally enough for the basic user, shouldn't cost more than 600/700 $ nowadays (i mean i have a surface with 128gb/4gb, and i remember old notebooks with 320gb hdd) like you said, we got phones that are quicker and with more storage. Those prices for ram and ssd should be illegal (not even gen 4).
@cthulhusol Says:

@piggletimpact Says:
bought the m2 in December only for this to come out for cheaper and lower the price of mine by $300cad can I get a F
@Jazman342 Says:
100% on the M1 MacBook Air if it will cover your basic needs. Bought one recently plus a 2tb external ssd as an upgrade from my 11 year old maxed out MBP. Main usage is music and have moved more to "stand alone" (MPC & Akai Force) but wanted a computer to handle Ableton Live and Native Instruments plug ins. The M1 is all I need for now and could not see the point in wasting more $. It's so easy to overspend these days and even the most basic stuff can do a lot.
@LanceThumping Says:
In what way is Apple ever an easy recommend for a laptop? At these prices, with their shitty practices, it's just asking to get people in trouble.
@cap_eath Says:
I just bought a Windows 11 laptop used for $150. It has 16G memory and a removable m2 250gb. It now has a 500gb Linux SSD. But I don't live on a laptop. I use a desktop for productivity. The laptop can do what the desktop does, I just like the desktop tools more. The laptop is relegated to the couch and is typically networked into the VM on the server
@JoeSiegler Says:
I upgraded to this a few days ago from a 2015 Intel MacBook Pro. Most of the comparison comments I see are based off of recent computers, not so much upgrading from an older one. This will be night and day better for me.
@gofastercloud7281 Says:
Yeah, so I don’t really need this, but upgrading from my M1 MBA anyway for the two external displays. So yes, I’m the exact idiot that Apple market at, and it works :( At least I can get the 24GB RAM, for only TOO MUCH MONEY.
@jennifersadler611 Says:
Compared to the 2019 Intel MacBook Pro (my current MacBook, and no M chip), is it worth upgrading to the M3 Air? 😊

In Brazil this laptob cost around USD 2400 (BRL 14000). No thanks! It's almost 1 year of minimum wage.
@ace41367 Says:
Sorry, but sometimes yes - is a terrible answer and advice. given you are spending $1000 or more dollars. If they sold a base with 12gb you could say this. The OS require about 6Gb. You really need 16 to 24 gb, if you do not want to replace it within 3-5 years. The storage ok, pay the apple tax, because you can use cloud storage. But 8GB memory is ridiculous, at that price point. If it was a $500 investment, ok… but these laptops are double that price point and in other countries, even more. Another key point is you will be swapping to the ssd storage more frequently, increasing wear on the 256gb, reducing future performance faster - great way to make your device age faster, and you cannot change this due to the SOC design - not good. Have to say this does not impact me personally, because I can afford whatever I reasonably need, but the 8GB and the $200 price upgrade as you stated is frankly gouging. Like the wheels on the Mac Pro, or the Apple cloth - seriously… As a reviewer, getting favor from Apple, I guess you have to say this. But you don’t feel the lie being sold, and the associated pain of a large number of people, trying to buy into the Apple ecosystems, after paying $600-1200 for their Apple phone, especially when they are not earning US salaries or getting funds from mom or dad…
@wireland1992 Says:
I just ordered the M3 MacBook Air. I basically use it as a desktop at home, so I needed the multiple display support. I generally try to get 10 years out of a laptop if I can, so I spec'd it accordingly. $200 for each upgrade is insane, but it's necessary if I want it to last that long. I'm upgrading from a 2012 MacBook Pro (which I upgraded myself along the way) and it's still running strong, although it's stuck on MacOS Catalina, which means I can't run a lot of things. It's still fine for basic web browsing and music though.
@Rieskae Says:
How about the support/software updates? If we buy the 2020 m1 air in 2024, aren’t we running behind?
