Gatekeeping customers with iMessage is great, but where is the innovative products? I am tired of being an Apple customer, but in many social situations, I almost need to be in the iMessage/FaceTime cult.

There appears to be a common misconception that iMessage uses end-to-end encryption. It doesn't. If it did, then it would be impossible to download your chat history when you replace your iphone. The only way this could be possible is if apple has access to your phone's encryption key which defeats the purpose of end-to-end encryption.
