Surface Duo 2: Can This Be Saved?

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is both better... and worse? Does this dual screen passport fold have a future? The surface duo has the best form factor ever. If M.S get rid of the camera bump, add a front screen with internal cameras and improve the software, I would buy this baby all day long.

It looks great and sleek. But, it needs to be updated just like Microsoft Windows 🪟 PC.😊
@nsylvester6489 Says:
@mkbhd it would be interesting if you can go back to Surface Duo 2 in 2024 with its latest software and o a video on it because even though there are all these new folding phones, none have seemed to be able to multitask like Duo 2

I hate the fact it wont fold flat just because they didn't made the camera flat. The only time i imagine it could be useful, if you are some type of inspector, and have to travel a lot and doesn't want to carry a big computer o tablet, and need to take pictures like for insurance, or need to open some quick documents or excel sheet while on the work. But i Don't know
@ariefbudi427 Says:
It kinda like two separate device that pretend to be one device
@potatoslayer7002 Says:
they really needed to make it a one screen device (im on the original rn)

So how hard do you think it would be for Microsoft to have sunk in camera lens’s? As for taking a pic, they should have used the design of the small Samsung flip phone with the small outside screen. The last thing is the split. Instead of rounding the edge why isn’t it squared since it already has two hinges that would separate the screens? With the edge squared they would almost touch when opened which would reduce the gap to a millimeter or less.

I bought a Surface Duo, the first iteration just now, 4 years after its release. I always loved the form factor and the sleek design. Never loved the Duo 2 and did not get one now. The Duo 2 is still very expensive and this Duo I got was brand new and cheap. Having it, I know that it’s not gonna replace my daily driver iPhone but I just love the nerdiness, that thinness, the aspect ratio and especially the multitasking functionality. That is what kept me wanting one and now having one it didn’t change my opinion. I love it for what it is, for me it’s a great gadget. Everybody wants to know what it is and love the thin and clean design. And it works great for a lot of things but not as a phone. I love it as much as my iPad Mini but I bring this Duo with me every day and I don’t bring my Mini with me like this. It’s so thin and light… So it’s somehow better and worse than that lovely iPad Mini I love more than my Pro. 😅 It’s not always about the specs and even not about the functionality. I bought it with my heart and now I know more people would if they got it as cheap as I did.

I still use my Duo 2 till this day. Honestly 2 years later, the bug is mostly gone. Still not perfect, but it finally feels like an ex flagship device. The camera bump is the only major hurdle for me. I don’t use the camera very often (as do people who decided to buy Duo) but now I have this huge bump that makes it uncomfortable to use when folded back and make it rocks when laying it flat to write using the pen. The image quality is not that great either. I will trade the camera with the ability to fold flat in a heartbeat. Saw a Video of someone literally ripping off the entire back camera the other day on Youtube, Just so that he can fold it flat. If not for the outdated specs and my concern over battery, I will never traded my OG Duo for Duo 2
@MrDannyloco Says:
Having a stylus inside would be so good for productivity and sketching stuff. Just in general i would love if this didnt become a flagship phone frankenstein, for me this would replace smart tablets if it was done well. Honestly really good software could fix most of the display clunkiness, and a 3ds build design style would make it more comfortable to handle
@MrDannyloco Says:
I would love to have this for $700 max

It turns out that after two years of everyday use, the Surface Duo 2 is the one for me. I adore my phone. I know that one day I will have to replace it with another one but I will probably never experience again the productivity of a dual screen with dual app and double screen apps. The sheer pleasure of opening my phone as I would do with a book is just magic. The formfactor is the thing that makes it for me.
@timbob1145 Says:
Its just a totally flawed idea, poorly executed with snazzy bits slapped on it

a single of this screen fit into an aluminium mid spec device would be sweetly desired. . . sick of skinny phones.
@lifeisgood7186 Says:
I just can't ever see myself owning a Duo 1,or 2. The software is buggy,too expensive for a cellphone that's not up to par as a $200 cellphone but what blows my mind the most is,how can you make a cellphone like the Duo and have absolutely no case to protect it. All the used ones I see have cracks all over, busted up and if they are in good shape they are too expensive. Blows my mind.
@parinose6163 Says:
Hi, Thx you so much for your review! Agree. A third screen with the cameras will be fine on the front! You will not need to open it to take pix... And the cameras could be level or on the surface!
@Cris-pt3jw Says:
This is great, only if google didnt do it better with the pixel fold
@eb6522 Says:
Just discovered today, that my less than 2 1/2 year old duo 2 is non-repairable, my battery is not lasting like it did, so tried opening a service & repair at Microsoft, and they no longer service the phone!, so I called them and they say they only replace phones, that they are non serviceable! and that they don't have units anymore! and I ask her so if I wanted a battery replacement how much would have cost me, and the lady says since its out of warranty the same as a new phone, but again we don't have stock. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS COMPANY! so much e-waste and such a loss, ($1700 !) a perfectly working phone, to the trash because they designed this device to not be repairable, you cant even find batteries anywhere!. Please bring this up to the attention of people!
@noahchasinguitar5831 Says:
It’s way too big… They should switch to one screen with a fold and make an outside screen like all other foldables
@eventualpine Says:
I already use a flip cover on my phone. The having to open it won’t be an issue
@eventualpine Says:
I would absolutely love this thing. It has everything good: -Microsoft -Insane aspect ratio -2 screens -big screen -under $2000 -Xbox game pass -looks like a DS -android -good flex -multitask -phone-tablet-laptop combo -I can run Square Home on it -doesn’t look like any other phone
@davidn.8150 Says:
Great video! Any better alternative with similar form factor? Phone or tablet.
@TehShadowDeath Says:
Looking back on this it's kinda sad that Microsoft decided to just give up on it all together.
@kingzach74 Says:
@mkbhd the slight gap between the backs of the SD2 make it possible to attach the Slim Pen 2 right between the halves.

Holy crap hard pass.
@suuriz Says:
Why did they cancelled the Surface Neo. Lenovo the only one that did a 2 screen laptop.
@give_me_my_nick_back Says:
2 years later and they only got more expensive since lol... it is so much better concept than galaxy fold, I wisk I could get one for a reasonable price
@CTNATION Says:
Why can't Spotify find this intro song😭
@njux07 Says:
I think they should bring back Windows OS and try the market one more time. The only issue I saw from a windows phone was their app selection but now having experience with the Xbox, Microsoft could offer consumers a viable product.
@havalanche Says:
They should rather make a Kindle type device not a phone... I mean they could add a sim slot, or music apps to make it (e-book, audiobook, calling too) but apart from that I don't think I will ever use a phone like that. But I think a pop up camera is a far better way to solve the camera issue.

@justauser Says:
I'm not convinced Microsoft is able to make any compelling mobile device, they tried Windows Mobile which was awful, they keep making wonky designs for no reason, they had something with Nokia going on for a bit but everything they have done so far has flopped. Zune anyone? Maybe they should refocus on the things they're actually good at?
@ezequielsanuy8895 Says:
They need to quit the bulky cammeras an put and outside screen.

Great idea.. dual screen is better than fold phones. More durable, no lines or nothing on screen,. But. My suggestions for microsoft is.. Work on bezels,a small 3rd screen for notifications, camera bump, and more important is gaps b/w both screens.
@inkardash Says:
Guys, why are you keeping judging this device as any other iPhone or Samsung phone? What if you just don't get the idea of the concept? "Oh-Oh - it will scratch the screen if I put it unfolded on the table.." WHY should you put that on the table with a screen down, while you could use a ^ shape? "Oh-Oh - it takes another second to open the device to see who's calling.." Is that smartwatch on your hand just for fasion? "If I had to work from the office I'd use that device for meetings. But at home I have a laptop" - Come on! While using a phone or a laptop without the proper headset you only disrespect the other parties of that meeting with your ugly sound quality. This device is a great helper, when you HAVE TO work remotely and don't have your normal laptop nearby. And that is just not the proper device for those who can't survive a minute without a social network. It's different by design.
@kevinbirge486 Says:
Well, no offense but... you wanted a camera... they put a camera... and now you're like... don't whant the camera. I mean like... wtf dude
@somebody_JB Says:
and this is why foldable phones exist
@theonlinething1039 Says:
I really hoped they don't use a foldable shit screen in version 3, but it seems they do indeed... F those folding screen devices, they're just bad.
@neilfordan Says:
they don't really believe in it, they themselves don't want to use it. it shows
